Updates from our Principal
Greetings Firebird Nation Families -
I hope everyone's week has gone well...we made it to another Friday! It is hard to believe that we only have 4 more weeks and then October Break will be here! That also means that Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up as well. They will take place on Thursday, October 7th, from 4pm - 7pm and again on Friday, October 8th, from 7:30am - 3:00pm. Be watching for more information from your grade level teams soon on how to sign up.
We had a very tough start to this week as we grieved the loss of a member of our Firebird Family. Johnny Grimaldo was a long time campus security officer and Firebird coach at FMS. We will miss him greatly. Our Firebird Family worked through this together during the week and I was so proud to see our Firebirds support each other (staff and students) through this difficult time. I saw numerous people checking in on each other and offering support in a variety of ways. That is what being a Firebird is all about and it is definitely something that Johnny promoted in our halls each and every day.
A CONGRATULATIONS goes out to our Firebird Athletics teams for their awesome wins this week. I watched our 7th and 8th Grade Volleyball teams defeat Fountain MS in some very competitive games. They also won the contest versus Panorama MS on Thursday. Our Cross Country runners had a competition on Wednesday at the Iron Horse Classic and performed very well versus a variety of schools in the region. Finally, we had our big Football game versus Skyview last evening. Both 7th and 8th grade teams defeated our rivals and represented Firebird Nation strong! We have a long standing tradition between our two schools that the winning Principal gets to call the other school's Principal to celebrate the victory. I am excited to make that call today!
We are beginning the process to plan our Mini Courses. These are special courses that take place the two days before Thanksgiving Break. We will conduct our arena scheduling process for these right after we get back from October Break. Students will be able to choose from a variety of opportunities related to future careers, skills, hobbies, etc. to participate in on these days. We will also have a place where community members can offer courses as well. We will send out a proposal form later next week if you would like to offer a course. Please note: We do check academic eligibility for these courses. If students are not performing well in their core and explore classes, then we do place them into an intervention course for one of these days to help them get back on track. So, it is important that your students really keep track of their grades right now so that they can sign up for multiple Mini Course options.
Finally, I want to make sure to remind everyone that if students are not feeling well or exhibiting any symptoms of illness that it is important for them to stay home. We want to do our part to keep illness out of FMS as best as we can. Please have your students stay home anytime they are not feeling well. Remember that our teachers update their landing pages each day on the FMS Website with what is taking place in class so students can complete their work when they are out. Each day is archived below to contain all of the assignments from past days as well.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! We will look forward to seeing everyone on Monday for another great week at Firebird Nation!
Sincerely,
Brian Smith

Dress Code Expectations
District-wide standards on student attire are intended to help students concentrate on schoolwork, reduce discipline problems, and improve school order and safety. The Board of Education recognizes that students have a right to express themselves through dress and personal appearance; however, students shall not wear apparel that is deemed disruptive or potentially disruptive to the classroom environment or to the maintenance of a safe and orderly school.
Any student deemed in violation of the dress code shall be required to change into appropriate clothing or make arrangements to have appropriate clothing brought to school immediately. In this case, there shall be no further penalty.
If the student cannot promptly obtain appropriate clothing on the first offense, the student shall be given a written warning and the opportunity to change into loaned clothing, if available, and the administrator shall notify the student's parent/guardian.
On the second offense a review of school expectations and rationale for dress and appearance will be accomplished, and a restorative conference with the parent/guardian shall be held.
On the third offense, parents will be contacted, and the student may be subject to suspension or other disciplinary action in accordance with Board policy concerning student suspensions, expulsions and other disciplinary interventions. Classes missed as a result of clothing related offenses are considered excused, however, the student may be required to make up class time missed.
