Some important information for this week....
Attendance
Just a gentle reminder to please complete your afternoon attendance promptly at 1:45pm. We can't do our office check until every single class has completed it - and lately Sherry has had to call in to multiple classes each afternoon. Merci!
Photocopying charges
OK folks - we not in a good place when it comes to photocopying. We've just received the budget numbers for September and October (before the colour copier arrived). Currently, we are on course to spend over $8,000 for the year! This is double what was projected and used in the past. We simply cannot handle that high of a cost. If it continues, please be aware we may not have the funds for consumable purchases for the main cupboard, PLC release time and other critical areas we need to financially support. Please be VERY aware of how much you're printing and always ask - do I really need a paper copy?
School Morale
Just a reminder to let Heather know if you're interested in the Sign Making workshop on November 25th.
So far we have 6 bakers who will be participating in the cookie swap. You have until Friday, November 22nd to let me know if you'd like to join in the fun!
Parent/Teacher Interviews
This week will be a busy one, as most of you are doing interviews late on Monday and Wednesday night. On Monday, dinner will be available in the staff room from 5pm (pizza and drinks). A reminder that I will not be able to be in the building on Tuesday, November 19th after school. If you haven't yet done so, please make sure we have a copy of your interview schedule in the office.
Filing of Progress Reports
Key Learnings and Progress Reports went home a week ago. Please make sure they are filed in OSR's by the end of the day on Friday, November 22nd. Please also double check that you have signed in your OSR's - some have not yet been done. All green folders that we used to track the reports should also be given back to Sherry so that we can use them for Term 1 reports.
Peterborough Regional Science Fair
This year the Peterborough Regional Science Fair will be held at Trent University on April 8th, 2020. I understand that in past years this is something that Susan coordinated. Now that she has retired, is there anyone interested it taking this on? Just let me know if you’re interested.
Bully Prevention and Intervention Week
A big thank you to Jessica Dearmer (our CYW placement student) and Kelly H who have put together a package of optional resources you may choose to use next week for Bully Prevention and Intervention. Of special note - the book referenced (The Recess Queen) can be borrowed from either Jessica or Kelly. The feather activity (each child designs and colours one feather) is a fantastic school wide project that will only take a few minutes to complete with your class. We really hope that if you do just one thing - this feather project would be it! Once the feathers are given to Jessica (as soon as you're done), she'll be using them to create a special bulletin board outside John's office. Finally - Thursday will be a spirit day called "Celebrate Unique You". Students are encouraged to express themselves through their clothing, hair, etc. - and we can focus on discussions about celebrating every single individual, no matter what we are wearing, look like etc. Please see the attached information from Jessica for more information, AND...listen to the announcements too!
Lost and Found
We'll be displaying all lost and found items on tables outside John's office during interview days (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday). Please take a minute to stop by with your class to pick up and find lost items to get them to their rightful owners.
Inclement Weather
1. In the case of inclement weather, it is expected that employees will make a reasonable effort to report to work at their regular work location (Section 1.2).
2. If, due to inclement weather, an employee is unable to report to their regular work location, the employee is expected to make a reasonable effort to report to the closest alternate work location in their own panel, where possible, (Section 1.3- Updated for 2019) and to inform their principal or supervisor of this (Section 1.4).
3. As road and/or weather conditions improve during the day, an employee is expected to report to the employee's regular work location later in the day, either from the alternate work location, or from home (Section 1.5).
Where an employee is unable to report for work at any work location due to inclement weather, for either all or part of a day, the employee must contact their supervisor immediately
Recess Club
We're not quite ready to get up and running, as I still need to touch base with each of you about possible candidates for this program. I hope to do that on Monday, and hopefully have the program up and running by mid-week. A reminder that this is a proactive support, intended to help students who experience difficulty socially on the yard and would benefit from some guided, social support in a positive setting. As mentioned, parents will also be receiving a letter home so they are aware their child may spend some time indoors when they choose to.
Technology
A quick update to let you know that 15 new Chromebooks have been ordered and we are awaiting their arrival, along with the new cart from Wanda Knowlton. In preparation for the new mixed Tech cart, Katie and I have also met to determine which iPads need to be moved around and/or collected for the new cart. This work will be happening over the next few weeks. If you have any questions, please just let Katie or I know.
School Improvement Plan
Our First Math PLC
Thank you to everyone for your support and collective learning as we ran through our first math PLC's of the year! Some sessions were calmer than others, but collectively I really enjoyed having some dedicated time together to talk about our School Improvement goal in Number Relationships. A reminder that pre-assessment data needs to be handed in to me by November 22nd. I’ll calculate our pre-assessment results so that we can have an idea of where we are at and our targets for the end of the year.
PA Day
This Friday is our second of three PA days devoted to professional learning. The morning will be focusing on math, and the afternoon focus is on Equity and Diversity. Please bring your School Improvement Plan binder and computer to the morning session, as my goal is to have an active, hands on, creative few hours that will set us up well for our next few strands. Lunch will be from 12pm - 1pm - feel free to make plans to leave the building, as long as you are back for our afternoon starting at 1pm.
Turtle Math
Are you familiar with the Turtle Math Contest? This is run annually by Trent University for students in Grades 1 - 6. So far Cheryl and Holly are the classes that are interested. See the November 11th Monday Memo for more information..... and let me know by Friday if you want your name added to the list.
