Jobs Children Did in Factories
This picture shows two little boys working in a factory. Their little hands come in handy while working with the machines in the factories, but it is very unsafe. The one little boy is also standing barefoot on a dirty factory floor which could have nails or glass on the ground and he could easily cut his foot. He also appeares to be flat footed which could have resulted from standing for the long hours. The other seems to have a bandage around his jaw maybe from being beaten for not working right? Who knows....
Jobs Children Did in Factories
- Cleaning under and inside machines many got killed or maimed as machines would be working as they went under or in them clean.
- Working in the coal mines by mineing for coal, pushing trolleys full of coal through the mine shafts,
- In the mines there where some boys called "Trappers" that opened and shut wooden doors to let air flow through the mines, a trapper boy sat in the dark with just a small canadle and no one to talk to.
Hours, Food and Working Conditions
This shows the dangerous working conditions the childeren (to small to work on the machines standing on the ground) faced, they had to climb up on the machines to work, this could turn very badley in just one missed step.
Hours, Food and Working Conditions
- Children sometimes worked up to 19 hours a day, with a one-hour total break. This was a little bit on the extreme, but it was not common for children who worked in factories to work 12-14 hours with the same minimal breaks.
- Not only were these children subject to long hours, but also, they were in horrible conditions. Large, heavy, and dangerous equipment was very common for children to be using or working near. Many accidents occurred injuring or killing children on the job. Not until the Factory Act of 1833 did things improve.
Accidents that often Happened
This is just one of the many injuries kids got while working during the industrial revolution. This boy suffared a broken hand and arm from it being crushed in a machine.
Accident That Often Happened
- Mutilations where one of the most common accidents do to the children working around unguarded machines and cleaning them while they where still on.
- It has been reported that most of the acceidents happened in the morning due to the children being so tired they where not paying attention and whould get caught in the machines.
Punishments Children Faced
Example of what children faced if the did not follow the orders of the idustries bosses or oversears.
Punishments Children Faced
- The children where usally whatched by "oversears" as they where called, they made sure the children did there job right and did not do anything wrong such as:
- Goof off, Sleep, Have fun, Talk, and many other rule where enforced on the children. If the children where caught breaking the rules punishments would occur like:
- Beatings, or being fired or haveing there pay reduced.
Efforts to Improve/Stop Child Labor
Many people tried to help the efforts in stoping child labor.
Efforts to Improve/Stop Child Labor
- Many efforts came through to improve the life of chidren workers like laws being set in by the government.
- Congress did pass an amendment in 1924 on the ban of child labor.
