British American Foundation of Texas Scholarship 2 Week FREE program
Dear All
The British American Foundation of Texas is a 501c3 nonprofit that raises funds to offer academic opportunities to underserved students in Texas.
We have a Junior Achiever program open to high school juniors in Texas. This is a 2 week all expenses paid program in London, England. We cover all costs - program, flights, accommodation, food, transfers, passport fees etc and raise money to do so. In fact, we've been doing this for 13 years now and the British Studies Summer Program that our students participate in in the UK has been running for 20 years. In total there are up to 30 students participating from across the USA, we are the only providers in Texas and we have 10 places this year. Students spend their days visiting historical, cultural and political places of interest in the UK - Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Shakespeare's Globe Theater, Imperial War Museum, Tate Art Gallery, Oxford, Stonehenge, Bath, Portsmouth etc, accompanied and chaperoned by teachers from ACS International School Cobham, which hosts the students on their fantastic campus just outside of London.
Why?
We find that smart, underserved students with no blueprint for college are not aware of their potential and capabilities. They don't realize that they can leave their state, they can be more independent, they can step outside their comfort zone. Past students have returned from our program and applied to colleges out of state and attended Harvard, Brown, Smith, Bryn Mawr, Georgetown, University of Chicago, Northeastern, University of Pennsylvania, Notre Dame etc. This program really looks great on college applications. Hear what some of our past Junior Achievers have to say about their experience here.
Dates
Deadline for applications: 5pm on January 31st
Awards ceremony in Houston for selected applicants: Thursday April 30th
Leave Houston for London: Sunday June 28th
Return to Houston: Saturday July 11th
Cost
Again, no cost to anyone .... schools, ISDs, students or families. We are a nonprofit, we raise funds and we support young people in Texas in achieving their potential through education.
Caveat
Unfortunately, as this program involves leaving and re-entering the USA, it is not available to students who are not legal residents or citizens of the USA.
How to apply
Students apply online here by 5pm on January 31st. They will need a completed application form, teacher recommendation, academic transcript and essay. We are seeking students with a good GPA, low household income, some extracurricular activities and community service.
