Mrs. Doody's Class

Week Of September 12th-16th

Weekend Fun!

My family enjoyed a fun filled weekend at the Tiger's game and the cider mill. I hope all of you enjoyed this beautiful weekend as well :)

First Week...

Our first week back was great! With this being our second year together it truly felt like a family reunion to me! We spent much of our first week refreshing ourselves on rules and routines as well as completing our NWEA tests. We have a little bit of the language portion left to finish and then we can get to business with our curriculum. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful kiddos with me :)

Academics

Reading:

We started reader's workshop last week and worked on setting some reader's "norms" and routines to ensure we are off to a positive start. Each student chose one realistic fiction book to read this week during our class time. We will be focusing on having meaningful conversations with reading partners, jotting our thinking as we are reading, and expanding our jots into character theories.

Writing:

Our first writing unit is personal narrative. This is often my favorite genre because I truly get to see your child's personality come through in their writing. On Monday and Tuesday students will be completing a personal narrative "on-demand" writing piece. This serves as a baseline piece for narrative writing and will be used to gauge how much growth your child makes by the end of our unit. We will spend our time learning several strategies for generating story ideas on Wednesday and Thursday. Our week will end with decorating our notebooks on Friday. Please make sure to send in supplies with your child!

Math:

Unit 1 in math essentially serves as a review of fractions from fourth grade. Although it might be a slow start after our long summer break I am confident your child will quickly pick up where they left off! On Monday we will be finishing our math pre-test and also looking at our pre-test scores to assess where we are at as a class. The rest of the week we will be working on reviewing fraction vocabulary, building equations using unit fractions, and creating equivalent fractions. Your child WILL have math homework at least two days this week.

Addams PTA

We are extremely fortunate to have such an active PTA at Addams. Many volunteers work extremely hard throughout the year to provide valuable opportunities and experiences for our students. If you have not already done so, please join our PTA and help support our wonderful community of learners. Here is a link to the membership form.

Planners

Your child should be filling out their planner EACH day for ALL of their classes (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies). I ask that you please look at their planner each night and talk with your child about their school day. In addition, please sign their planner to let me know you are staying updated. If you have any questions or concerns the planner is a great communication tool for quick messages.
