A Warm Welcome From Our Superintendent!

November is here, the holiday season is approaching, and we are in the final weeks of 2019! It’s time to share our November 2019 issue of the Compass Chronicle, our quarterly newsletter, full of important information and exciting updates about Compass Charter Schools.


Earlier this month, I shared my focus on gratitude blog with our #CompassFam. It is a great pleasure to see the amazing and creative work our scholars have been completing to take their learning to the next level, and I am truly grateful to our teachers, staff and learning coaches for supporting our scholars on their educational journey. I am also so happy to see our Compass community taking advantage of the many engagement opportunities we have been able to provide so far this year. I hope you enjoy learning more about our scholars, our families, our staff, and the amazing work that is happening in this newsletter!


Is there something specific you'd like to see in the newsletter? We have Virtual Suggestion Boxes for scholars, as well as parents, where you can share your input on Compass Charter Schools. We review these monthly with our Parent Advisory Council, Scholar Leadership Council, and Staff Advisory Committee. Feel free to share your suggestion(s) today to help us continue to enhance the educational experience for our scholars.


Congratulations to our scholars on their fantastic work so far! I encourage you to continue exploring the world around you on your unique path and share your experiences with your teachers and peers!

Meet Mrs. Rebecca MacAlpine, Director of Engagement

Meet Mrs. Rebecca MacAlpine, Director of Engagement

As the Director of Engagement, I get to design and implement engagement activities throughout the regions that we serve and I am so grateful for the opportunity to help scholars make lifelong memories. Our engagement activities include field trips, Virtual Scholar Workshops, contests, scholar clubs, Learning Coach Academy, 8-Grade Promotion, High School Graduation and more! I am passionate about helping scholars fall in love with learning and ensuring they receive the support that they need to succeed. Outside of my professional life, you'll find me spending time with my family and friends or on our city trail going for a run!

What's Been Happening in Engagement?

Let's reflect on the field trips and engagement events we've had so far:


Back to School Picnics - We kicked off the school year by hosting six Back-to-School Picnics across the state! Picnics were held in Sebastopol, Winters, Los Angeles, Corona, Costa Mesa and San Diego at the end of September. All picnics had specially designed activities for scholars and pizza for everyone who came out to celebrate the new school year! The Compass family had a great time connecting in-person!

Field Trips - We've had an exciting school year so far in engagement! Scholars have already visited the Sacramento Zoo, Lindsay Art Glass, YoMo, iFly, OceanQuest, San Diego Zoo, Bedford Gallery, Fort Ross, Logan’s Candies, Lyon Air Museum, Riley’s Farm, and Taylor Guitars!
Virtual Scholar Workshop - We held our first virtual scholar workshops for the school year, including Scholar Social Hours doing icebreakers, learning strategies to make friends, using a growth mindset, and even how to master nonverbal communication! Scholars also participated in Halloween-themed art using household items to make a bat bookmark and a paper plate vampire. Additionally, we enjoyed a Be Strong Live tour, Energy Bus introduction, Scholar Clubs kickoff, and an amazing Scholar Talent Show! Scholars had a blast interacting with each other virtually and learning with our Compass staff members.

Contests - Since the start of the year, we have hosted four contests already! Scholars sent in fun Back to School selfies, participated in Spirit week, and are completing Acts of Kindness bingo throughout the month of November!


Scholar Clubs Kickoff - In October, we launched our scholar clubs for the 2019-20 school year! Scholars have the opportunity to pick from several club options that support their interests including art, photography, chess, Minecraft, LEGOs and more!
