Welcome Back

Books, databases and more....

New Books

I will submit my first book order next week. Please forward any titles, authors or subjects you are interested in to me by next Wednesday. You will once again be able to preview the new books during our Books and Breakfast in October.

Looking for mentor texts? If I do not have the specific title you are looking for, I can interlibrary loan the book from another school library or find you another book.

Multi Media Resources

Don't forget to check out the print and electronic resources available on the BOCES Multi Media website. All passwords have been reset to wswheboces. If you would like help accessing multiple copies of books, jackdaws, streaming videos or any other type of media, please stop in to see me.

Databases and Research

Every student in kindergarten through fifth grade researches a topic using the WISE (Wonder, Investigate, Synthesize and Express) Inquiry process during their information literacy skills lessons. A big part of this process is investigating the topic. To find adequate information, students must use our subscription databases. We offer a wide range of databases. Databases can also be used to quickly learn about a topic, to locate informational texts or to simply play educational games. Incorporating these essential resources into your projects can easily be accomplished with a quick trip to the Library.

Very excited to share our newest database, BookFlix by Scholastic. You will definitely want to check this database out. BookFlix pairs a fiction book (in a video format) with an informational book.

The screencast below will remind you how to easily access all of our databases. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxv86yeYBLDQRlpUdTJFbXYxQ3c/view?usp=sharing

Summer Reading Graffiti

Please stop in to share a book title and author with our students by writing it on my Summer Reading Graffiti bulletin board.

Nonfiction Lunch Bunches

Beginning October 1st, I will offer a weekly lunch bunch. I will choose a nonfiction text to read with a group of students and discuss it over lunch. If you have students you feel will benefit from this lunch bunch, please e-mail me. I will happily choose a topic of interest based on your recommendations.

I had a wonderful time teaching a technology enrichment class this summer at the middle school. I learned a lot about how to engage students by creating a ThinkTank environment, providing them with a variety of resources and giving them the freedom to explore their curiosities. My goal is to offer a Makerspace area in the Library Media Center by October 1st. I will keep you updated.

Book Fairs

Our first Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for September 23rd, 24th and 25th in the Library Media Center from 5:30-7:30. I will e-mail a list of faculty and staff who will receive a book fair credit for their classroom.

We will host a second book fair at Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga on November 7th and 8th. Our school library will receive 10% of every sale when our school is mentioned.

Please feel free to stop in the library, e-mail me or call if you need any assistance at all.

Happy Reading!!
Laurie Alden
