The Scholastic Book Fair arrived today. The official book fair dates are September 19th-September 21st from 5-7pm. Students may shop during the school day next week if they are unable to attend the evening hours. Check out the online flyer here.

Multi Media Resources

Don't forget to check out the print and electronic resources available on the BOCES Multi Media website. All passwords have been reset to wswheboces. If you would like help accessing multiple copies of books, jackdaws, streaming videos or any other type of media, please stop in to see me.

Reader's Advisory Committee

Beginning October 1st, I will be sharing information about a Reader's Advisory Committee with my students. Students will apply to become a member of the committee. The Reader's Advisory Committee's goal is to inspire more students to read more often.

Databases and Research

Every student in kindergarten through fifth grade researches a topic using the WISE (Wonder, Investigate, Synthesize and Express) Inquiry process during their information literacy skills lessons. A big part of this process is investigating the topic. To find adequate information, students must use our subscription databases. We offer a wide range of databases. Databases can also be used to quickly learn about a topic, to locate informational texts or to simply play educational games. Incorporating these essential resources into your projects can easily be accomplished with a quick trip to the Library.

I am super excited to share the new Library databases with you. Please take a moment to watch this screencastify. As always, please e-mail me or stop in if you would like to collaborate on a research unit or activity. If your students will be searching for information sources online, please e-mail me. I will prepare them with a lesson/review on keyword searching, evaluating online sources, and how to successfully access information in digital media.

Global Read Aloud

The Global Read Aloud will begin October 1st. More than 1.2 million students in more than 70 countries will participate. During the first week I will read My Heart Fills with Happiness by Monique Gray Smith and Julie Flett and the students will make a global connection with as many students as possible using FlipGrid. 1000 Book Club

I have a volunteer preparing the 1000 Book Club bags to begin circulating. My goal is to send home a letter to parents next week. Students will borrow a bag of 10 books to read at home, return the bag, and borrow a new bag. The bag circulation slowed down the last few years. I received a donation of books from our School Library System to upgrade some of the bags. Very excited to recharge this program.

The Makerspace is open and ready for students to tinker, create, and explore. Students can visit the Makerspace on Thursdays from 1:45-2:20 and Fridays from 1:35-2:20.
Please feel free to stop in the library, e-mail me or call if you need any assistance at all.

Happy Reading!!
Laurie Alden
