September 1, 2023, marks the start of Attendance Awareness Month! This is a time to focus on the importance of attending school daily. Positive, daily attendance is essential for student learning and correlates with student success throughout the school year. The first ever Girls Flag Football seasons are underway for student-athletes at Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks and Westlake High Schools following the sport being approved as a CIF-Southern Section sanctioned sport last year. This exciting and competitive sport is another excellent opportunity for students who are interested in athletic participation. CVUSD is proud to pave the way for this new sport opportunity to be added to comprehensive high school sites, which will allow student-athletes the chance to showcase their skills and talents on a competitive stage as well as promote the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership.

Students at Newbury Park High School, Thousand Oaks High School and Westlake High School earned academic honors from the 2023 College Board National Recognition Programs. These programs celebrate students' hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance. Our CVUSD awardees received recognition in one or more of the following areas: National African American Recognition Award, National Hispanic Recognition Award and National Indigenous Recognition Award. Thanks to Measure I, swinging, sliding and playing with friends has never been more fun on our campuses! Spotlight on three of our new Kindergarten play areas at our Ladera STARS Academy, Weathersfield Elementary and Westlake Hills Elementary, which were upgraded beautifully to greet our students and kick off this new school year with added FUN.

Up next? Construction of all new play structures at Glenwood Elementary is underway, and construction of the upper play structure at Acacia Magnet School for Enriched Learning begins at the end of this month!

The CVUSD is proud and grateful to have a community that supports our new teachers! Before the first day of school, our first year CVUSD Induction Teachers were gifted welcome bags and bundles of books to build their classroom libraries from The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library. Thank you to these two organizations for making a positive impact in our school communities.

The CVUSD's Communications Internship Program is now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year. High school students who are currently enrolled in the 11th and 12th grade and have an interest in social media content creation, writing, journalism, video production, photography, marketing, website design and/or graphic design are encouraged to apply.
