The Red Wolf
(canis rufus)
Reasons why their endangered:
The red wolf was subject to intense predator control programs and loss of habitat in the 1960s.
Efforts being made to save the species
When the red wolf was pronounced endangered in 1973, biologists hosted an effort to locate and capture the remaining wolves (17). 14 of those wolves took part in a program that bred in captivity. When enough were bred in captivity, they were released in the wild to Alligator River Wildlife Refuge in northeastern North Carolina.
