Colts,
Testing season is officially over for our Colts, which means our CMS students collectively took nearly 1,500 STAAR tests this school year. That is a lot of state testing. We take a lot of pride in not letting that test become the main focus and drive of instruction at CMS; rather, we allow best teaching practices (not semester-long STAAR worksheets) guide our daily teaching. Although the STAAR test is a reality in education and our Colts do well with it, I'm proud to say CMS is so much more than the numbers will ever show on any one particular day of assessment. We do our best to focus on the whole child, which the STAAR test could never measure. Our approach to everything we do remains a constant and that is to do our very best in everything we take on as Colts. For that, I want to thank you for your continued partnership with us to help guide our Colts to all forms of personal success.
Next week we will begin to wind down the last grading cycle. Towards the end of the week, zero hour classes will conclude for the year along with many of our campus programs. Our Colts are definitely on the home stretch wrapping up another successful school year. Thank you for supporting our Colts and staff during this full and exciting time of year. I hope you have a great weekend!

CMS Construction
Colts,
It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of May and we will soon be winding down another successful year at CMS! Before we disperse for summer break, I wanted to share some information with you regarding our campus and summer construction.
As part of the 2016 Bond, our campus will be receiving classroom door hardware for fire safety, some new air conditioning/heating equipment, a controlled vestibule area and a renovated learning commons. Over the summer, construction crews will work to create a new main entrance to our building where the controlled vestibule will be located. The general contractor has told us that this entrance will not be finished by the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, therefore while this work is being completed, students, parents and visitors can enter through the bus drop off entrance as well as by the band hall.
Once inside the vestibule, parents and visitors will notice new equipment and procedures. These technological additions will help further secure our campus. In addition to working with our construction program team, we have also been working with the GCISD Director of Emergency Management and School Security on these important changes. He is currently working on a video that will detail the new procedures and how to operate the equipment that will also help streamline our visitor process. We will be sharing that video with you in the next few weeks and will also send reminders close to the beginning of school.
Another piece of important information to share is the schedule that Lee Lewis Construction (LLC) has provided us. LLC has told us that all construction will not be complete by the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year. The construction schedule shows achieving substantial completion of the renovations by October 18. They have assured us that our interior building spaces will be functional and the learning commons useable but not necessarily complete. In thinking about this, I would ask that you pardon the dust and help us show patience and flexibility as we work with LLC to allow them to work and finish. Obviously, as we go through the summer we will monitor progress and in August begin to communicate about any temporary conditions or processes for our return.
As we approach the beginning of the new school year, it will be imperative to check my newsletters for information. This is an exciting time at Colleyville Middle School and I look forward to enjoying these renovated spaces with our Colt family! If you have any specific questions regarding the construction work CMS renovations, please let me know.

Keyboarding Resource for Students
Do you want to increase your student’s keyboarding skills? Typing Club is a web-based program for Grades 3-8 in GCISD that teaches students how to touch-type. The engaging and interactive experience is gamified, so learning proper hand positioning, posture and typing technique is fun for students. Your students can even use this program over the summer break. Students can easily access Typing Club through ClassLink or by signing in with their GCISD Google account and password at gcisd.typingclub.com.
