A message from our Governor, Gina Raimondo
What would you do as #RIGovForADay?
Happy Women’s History Month!
Over the last year, we’ve seen young people speaking up and engaging in our democracy. We’ve also seen more women in public office than ever before. But women still make up less than a quarter of representatives in Congress and there are only nine female governors.
You can’t be what you can’t see. Despite our progress, too many young girls grow up without seeing themselves represented in their government.
It’s important to me that young girls know their ideas — and their futures — are limitless.
So I’m asking 5th through 8th grade girls in Rhode Island a very special question:
“What would you do if you were Rhode Island’s Governor for a Day?”
This Women’s History Month initiative is open to girls in 5th through 8th grade throughout the state.
Interested applicants should apply by March 15, 2019 and answer this question in 400 words or fewer OR in a 1-2 minute video:
“What would you do if you were Rhode Island’s Governor for a day?”
Students must submit the following information along with their essay or video:
- Name
- Age
- School
- Grade
- Home Address
- Phone Number
- Email Address
- Teacher’s Contact Information
- Parent or Guardian Name(s)
- Parent or Guardian Phone Number
Applicants may email their essays or videos as an attachment to communications@governor.ri.gov. Google documents or other file sharing services will not be accepted. Videos must be no larger than 14MB, no longer than 2 minutes, and emailed as an attachment. Email submissions must include “2019 GFAD” in the subject line. The Governor’s office will confirm that submissions have been received within 24 hours (72 hours on weekends).
Or they may mail their essays to:

Pennies for Patients Information
March 4th to March 8th- THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART IN OUR Pennies for patients initiative this year!
*Thank you for your support of our Pennies for Patients Campaign last year, sponsored by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). We are running Pennies this year from March 4 - 8, 2019.
Pennies is a service-learning program that gives students the unique experience of working together to help raise awareness and funds in honor of thousands of children and adults fighting blood cancers.
Leukemia is one of the leading fatal cancers of children ages 1 – 20. The 5-year survival rate for children under the age of 20 with the most common form of leukemia (ALL) went from 3% in the 1960s to over 90% today.
Every day we are getting closer to finding cures for all blood cancers!
Join our Hero Squad! Our goal is to raise $1,200 and WE NEED YOR HELP! We are asking that everyone (students, faculty, parents, alumni, etc.) at Tiogue Elementary School (this spelling) join in this effort of raising awareness and giving funds to benefit the mission of LLS. Share this link with your family and friends. Click on the link here https://events.lls.org/pages/ri/TiogueElementarySchool-2019 or find your student’s school at www.PenniesForPatients.org.

Reporting Illnesses to School:
Please let the school know why your child(ren) are out sick. This is the season for many different illnesses. The Flu has hit Rhode Island. Reporting will help us to track the progress of illness this winter.
Please continue to periodically check your child's head for lice. If you suspect that your child(ren) have lice, please let me know.
Thank you.

Please consider filling out this annual Dept. of Education survey - we would like your input
The RI Dept. Of Education's SurveyWorks Opened on January 14th. The survey finishes up on March 29th. (See information Below)
Dear Parents:
The Rhode Island Department of Education is currently administering its yearly SurveyWorks Parent Survey, which is an opportunity for parents to provide feedback about our school and our children’s opportunities to learn. The survey results are most useful when all parents participate, so I am writing to ask you to participate in this survey.
Your views on matters like the safety of your child at school, the way students are taught, the condition of the school, and how connected you feel to this school are important. By taking this short survey you can help our school leadership and our parent-teacher organization to make improvements to our school. Responses are anonymous and cannot be linked to any individual; no one can tie your responses back to you.
You can take the short survey online between January 14th and March 31th. To take the survey, visit: surveys.panoramaed.com/ride then enter: 06116family to gain access to Tiogue School's Survey. Each school in the state has their own individual code.
Thank you,
Dom Giusti
