Lydia Middleton Learning Commons
Creativity, Curiosity, Innovation
January 2019
Coding took over the Learning Commons this month. Students have really enjoyed Dance Party, the new addition to the Hour of Code page and having fun coding The Foos in Fooville! We also learned about and celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thank you,
Mrs. Stevenson and Ms. Schmitt
Coding, it's for everyone!
What an awesome opportunity learning to code can bring to our students and their futures.
Do a little dance, make a little code.
Students in 3rd & 4th grade followed Dance Party tutorials that helped them code interactive dance moves and special effects as they learn basic Computer Science (CS) concepts.
The 2018 tutorial is here and it's all about dancing!
CodeSpark
We talk a lot about the design process. We stress to students to use the "Test and Learn" steps. How to think through the problem. We don't give up, try small pieces and test, and collaborate when needed.
Honor and Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King
K - 2 grade students reflected on a time they helped others and using Seesaw made a recording sharing how they helped someone.
We talked to students in 3rd & 4th grade about what it means to be a true warrior like Dr. King who showed tremendous strength, compassion, and courage. Students then reflected on how they have been warriors with a writing prompt in Google Classroom.
New Resource - Britannica School Insights
Britannica offers thousands of up-to-date, curated, and curriculum-relevant articles, images, videos, audio clips and so much more.
All of our 3rd & 4th grade students have created their Britannica Online accounts and are super excited to start using this amazing resource!
Britannica Insights is a Chrome Extension that will show you entries from Britannica on the right-hand side of your Google search results. It works when you conduct a Google search the extension will generate a list of related Britannica articles on the same page as the Google results.
What a time saver when starting a research project!

About Us
Our goals are to:
- Get students excited about the library space and learning.
- Give students opportunities to work on engaging tasks.
- Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically and creatively.
Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
