Weekly Brief
1. DPAS II As you are aware, the need to do evaluations remains part of Delaware code and therefore the Department is working to provide guidance. I understand your concerns and I will continue to provide information. For now, please wrap up any aspect of DPAS II that you can remotely. Feel free to conduct any post-observations conferences. If the required number of observations are complete and you need to complete a summative form, I would write the summative and hold a conference. For now, don't worry about Measure B or C Component 5 requirements. If a novice teacher hasn't completed their Professional Responsibilities form, have them complete it. If you are district administrator, now is a good time to complete your evaluations as well.
Best Practice: In times of uncertainty people worry more, naturally. Please communicate any step you are taking in regards to DPAS II with the teacher. Talk to them about how you are going to move forward, why, and leave an opportunity for some questions.
Reminder: Administrative assistants should be receiving an annual evaluation as well. I don't know know if this practice has been done in the past, but moving forward this will be a practice. Let me know if you need the evaluation form.
2. This week we wrap up the 3rd MP. I know each of you have stepped up and are constantly leading effectively. In times like these it's paramount that we don't leave any stone unturned.
- Have all teachers provided students the opportunity to make up assignments?
- Have all teachers provided students 3 additional assignments?
- Have teachers made you aware of potential Ds and Fs?
- Do teachers know how and when to inform you of students who have access but are not submitting work?
- Do you have a complete list of students who have not yet accessed Schoology?
- Is your plan in place to contact these students? (e.g. Certified Letters)
The primary reason we wanted to offer three additional assignments was due to the high D and F rate as of March 13th. When Dr. Edge ran gradebook reports we were at 70%. This means that when we are in school, the last two weeks is really grade recovery, which is something we will have to tackle in the future. For now, it means our students had a lot of work to make up to salvage their grade.
3. 4th MP plan of action is forthcoming. Teachers really seem to be working cooperatively together, which is fantastic. Our plan will provide clear parameters and clarification on how to give an assessment.
4. Personnel We are moving forward with filling vacancies. We know that one of the very best ways to attract qualified candidates is through our employees. Make our vacancies known to our staff so they can spread the word!
Up Ahead: Remote Learning
As we end the 3rd MP and moving into the 4th, we will certainly experience challenges. The key is to anticipate issues so a challenge doesn't become a crisis.

Going Beyond...Soichiro Honda
Our goal for the next two months is to soar as a district. To take hold of this awful virus by guaranteeing we are still meeting the educational, emotional, and physical needs of all our students. I know this isn't easy nor do I have all the answers. But this team is impressing.
I want to celebrate as a district in June for fully shifting gears and doing what many believe is impossible.
For some inspiration and belief, consider the spirit of Mr. Honda.
- 1938 while in school, he took everything he owned and started a company to design piston rings. Sold most of what he had including his wife's jewelry only to be denied by Toyota, who claimed his design was inferior.
- Two years later, the design was finally accepted, but he needed concrete to build a factory. With war ensuing the Government would not give him any. He persevered and found a way to build the shop anyway.
- During the war it was bombed twice. Desperate he collected the gas cans discarded from American troops to use a raw material, "gifts from Truman."
- Almost back on his feet, an earthquake leveled the shop. He decided to sell the rights of his piston operation to Toyota.
- After the war Japan suffered an enormous gasoline shortage. Mr. Honda strapped a motor to his bicycle. It resonated with some and he saw an opportunity.
- With no money he appealed to over 18,000 bike shops to help him with capital to open a factory. 5,000 business owners stepped up and the "super cub" was born. Mr. Honda became "an overnight" success.
- As of 2018, Honda’s workforce was 215,638 people worldwide.
