Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
Good morning! Thank you for a great first full week of 2019. What a way to start our final semester of the school year! This week continue to focus on ensuring that instruction, school work, and assessments are fully aligned to the standards. Continue to give students opportunities to take ownership of their learning through content-based discourse, real-world learning opportunities, and collaborative experiences. I look froward to seeing you and our Pirate learners in action. Let’s soar to new heights this school year!!
With that, I submit the Captain’s Log! #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot #finishstrong cje
Instructional Strategy Spotlight
What is Socratic Questioning
Named for Socrates (ca. 470-399 B. C.), the early Greek philosopher/teacher, a Socratic approach to teaching is based on the practice of disciplined, rigorously thoughtful dialogue. The instructor professes ignorance of the topic under discussion in order to elicit engaged dialogue with students. Socrates was convinced that disciplined practice of thoughtful questioning enables the scholar/student to examine ideas logically and to be able to determine the validity of those ideas. Also known as the dialectical approach, this type of questioning can correct misconceptions and lead to reliable knowledge construction.
Key Idea: The teacher leads the student to the answer through questioning vs. giving the student the answer when he or she gets it wrong. It requires a deep understanding of the content to question at this level. Students in grades PreK-12 and beyond can follow the teacher's questions to the knowledge the teacher desires them to learn. Follow the link above to read a script of this type of questioning.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
LETTERS OF INTENT: Mrs. Liles forwarded the electronic letters of intent last week. Thank you to those who have completed the document. Responses are due January 18, 2019.
To properly plan we must have an accurate count of those intending to return, resign, or retire for the 19-20 school year. Those intending to resign or retire should submit a letter of resignation/retirement to your principal or supervisor. Retiring and resigning Pirates may be asked to participate in an exit interview. Please be willing to provide feedback to help us grow.
Calendar Committee: The calendar committee will meet January 24 at 3:30 pm in Central Services Office boardroom. Mrs. Curry will forward an invitation this week.
Technology-Based Grants: When writing a grant that involves computers and smart devices, contact Mr. Brad McJunkin, technology coordinator, to ensure the item(s) meet our district’s expectations and works with our systems. All equipment, once received, must be tagged and inventoried. As long as the recipient is in the district, the equipment may follow a faculstaff member from one assignment to the next. Upon separation, the equipment becomes property of the district. Also, make sure to seek prior approval from the principal and superintendent before formally pursuing any fundraiser. Thank you in advance for your input.
