What makes a quality literacy program?
What is the Daily 5?
It is a framework for structuring your literacy program. It creates opportunity for the teacher to engage in small-group instruction and check-in with individual students. It motivates students to read and write every day. It builds student independence and reading stamina.
Read to Self
Build reading stamina.
Read 'good fit' books.
Work on Writing
Student or teacher can choose the topic.
Can be used as an extension to the reading.
Read To Someone
Sit shoulder to shoulder, knee to knee.
Share the book.
Check for understanding
Listen To Reading
Listen to reading with technology.
This is a great way to integrate technology into literacy or promote our Raz-Kids.
Word Work
Use magnetic letters, stamps, white boards, etc.
Can practice sight words, spelling words, making words...
Meet with the Teacher
While your students are going through the Daily 5, you are meeting with students. Remember - your groups are flexible and change according to needs and your teaching goals.
