Hudson Hawk Band Updates

Week of 1/17/22

Hoodie Order Form due TUESDAY 1/18

All students who indicated they want to order a hoodie received an order form yesterday. The order form is due by Tuesday, January 18. Payment is due upon receipt of hoodie (likely the week of January 31).

The hoodie will be gray with the design shown. Cost is $25 for youth sizes and adult s-xl and $30 for adult 2xl or larger.

Band Fees

Spring band fees are due February 4. Please check your student's Charms account under the finances tab to see total balances. Hoodies and tuxedo shirts will be added to the Charms accounts next week. You can send cash, checks (made out to Hudson Band Boosters), or pay in Charms with Paypal. Please let us know of any financial difficulties so we can help however possible. We have many competitions and events planned this semester and band fees are the main way we are able to provide those experiences for your students. Thanks for understanding!

CHANGE to Wind Symphony Spring Sectional Schedule

The clarinets and horns/alto saxes have switched. We made the change due to an unavoidable conflict. Thanks for being flexible and understanding!

The Wind Symphony sectional schedule is changing for the spring semester. We will begin sectionals next week (on Tuesday, January 18 - due to the holiday on 1/17). Please notice that sectionals will be EVERY week, but will only last 45 minutes. It is IMPERATIVE that students are on time and READY TO PLAY (already warmed up) when sectionals begin. Thanks in advance for making sure your Wind Symphony student is present and on time to their sectionals.

Advanced Band Solo & Ensemble Contest - February 19

All Wind Symphony, Honors, and Symphonic Band students will participate in the GISD Solo & Ensemble Contest on Saturday, February 19 at Austin Academy. If you have an event scheduled that day that conflicts with the contest, please let Mrs. Becker know by Wednesday, January 19. We can request a morning or afternoon time when we input the student entries (which are due January 20).

This competition is a required performance and part of our TEKS for band. Please let us know if you have any questions.

What Should We Be Practicing?

Practicing should happen daily to help build coordination and muscle memory and retain progress. Students should practice sitting in a real chair (preferably one that doesn't roll/spin), using a music stand, with a metronome. Please make sure woodwind players are properly swabbing out their instrument at the end of every practice session to keep their instruments clean!

Rhythm Rockers units 1-5, Musical Mastery warm-up exercises, pages 9-12 in Sound Innovations, Double Reeds units 4 & 5 in Boot Camp book, SCALES!!!

Winter 50 Day Challenge

Students received a new practice challenge just before we left for the winter break. It challenges them to practice for 50 days before February 19. They will be invited to a before school donut party and an after school game party if they complete the challenge.

Grades and Eligibility

Academics are incredibly important to us and we expect all of our students to do well in ALL of their classes. This semester, passing ALL classes on report cards is necessary for students to participate in the competitions this spring and our trip to Pinstack in May. If you struggled last semester, make sure to start off on the right foot this quarter. Turn in ALL assignments ON TIME. That's the biggest secret to passing your classes - just don't get zeros! We know you are all capable of passing your classes and want to make sure you get to participate in the fun band activities this semester. Take care of business!

Are You Handy? Like to Build Things?

I have grand visions of organizing our percussion storage room over the next few weeks because it's too small and we have too much equipment. If you happen to be handy and want to help build shelves for our cymbals, drum pads, and drum stands, please let me know! This picture is similar to what I have in mind.

Instrument Usage Fees in Skyward

If your student plays a school-owned instrument (oboe, bassoon, tenor/bari sax, French horn, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and select others), their district school-owned instrument usage fee is reflected in their Skyward account now. These directions to submit an online payment in Skyward should help you with completing that payment. Please let Mrs. Becker know if you have questions.
