One Pagers
A Creative Strategy for Any Classroom
What is a One Pager?
Students take what they’ve learned—from a textbook, a novel, a poem, a podcast, a Ted Talk, a guest speaker, a video clip, a lecture,—and put the highlights onto a single piece of paper.
Why use this strategy?
- The combination of mixing images with information leads to powerful results.
- It provides variety, a way for students to share what they’ve learned --- beyond the usual written options.
What goes into a one pager?
Students can include:
- quotations
- ideas
- images
- analysis
- key take-aways
- important people and dates
Students can make connections to:
- their own lives
- TV/ Film/Music
- pop culture
- other classes
How do I implement one pagers?
1. Choose the elements you want students to include on the one pager
2. Select a template OR use a blank sheet of paper!
3. Connect your instructions to your layout. Make it clear which elements should go in which area of your template.
4.Create a simple rubric with the key categories you want your students to succeed with.
5. Introduce one pagers to your students. Show examples.
6. Give students class time to work on one pagers. Answer any questions they might have. Provide art supplies if students wish to use them.
7.Do a gallery walk or have students share in small groups before collecting.
8. Create a display with completed one pagers.
More than an assessment...
Yes, one pagers are great to assess after a reading a novel, poem, or chapter, but there are numerous ways to incorporate one pagers into your class!
- Use as an "about me" at the beginning of the year to get to know your students
- Tell Your Story-- all about students' lives
- Share key information from nonfiction articles or current events
- Keep students focused when watching a video, listening to a podcast, or guest speaker
