Lewis and Clark, Expenition

In the map above it shows the expedition into the Louisiana purchase. Jefferson had purchased the Louisiana territory from the French. Jefferson had made Lewis an offer- to lead an expedition into the land west of the mississippi, with the assistance of William Clark.

Westward Expansion:

      To Jefferson, westward expansion was the key to the nation's health. He believed that a republic depended on an independent, virtuous citizenry for its survival, and that independence and virtue went hand in hand with land ownership, especially the ownership of small farms. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from the French government for $15 million. The the Louisiana territory stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.

The expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, consisting a selected group of U.S. Army volunteers under the command of Captain Meriwether Lewis and The assistance of his close friend, second Lieutenant William Clark.

What does it mean to be an American as an explorer during Westward Expansion?

According to William Clarkś journal entries, The Journey Begins, ¨On May 14th William Clark and nearly four dozen men left their St. Louis-area camp- where they had been preparing for the expedition since the fall of 1803- to meet up with Meriwether Lewis on May 20th." To be an American as an explorer, they needed to be determined.

The explorers were determined to discover the new land. For instance, Lewis and Clark, two explorers showed determination in the journey entire , The Journey Begins, ¨After we set out to day a hard wind from the W.S.W accompanied with a hard rain, which lasted with short intervales all night.¨ (2) This shows explorers pushed through the harsh weather, and labor.

Furthermore, to be an american as an explorer it meant that you had to be determined to make it through tough traveling. Determination as an explorer meant that you did not let fear or an obstacle get in their way. American explorers where a big part of the expansion of the United States.

The impact of westward expansion

Many of the Plains tribes depended on the buffalo for survival. Several tribes followed the buffalo migration, harvesting conservatively to fill tribal needs. The Indians ate buffalo meat, used its hide for clothing and shelter. US army, railroad companies & white settlers systematically set out to kill all bison.
