October 2022- Enon Elementary School
Principal's Message
It's been a busy first few weeks of school and our students are doing great! Thank you for your continued support in having them here and ready to learn.
I hope the Enon Bus Loading Document is working well for you. I am including it again in case you missed the earlier email and need to check the time your child's bus is leaving. Remember that the app is also available through Transportation.

Please save the date for our first in person family night in quite a while! We are welcoming families on Monday, October 10th at 6:30 p.m. for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Night where we have an "Out of This World" theme. Students will have the opportunity to participate in different stations including engineering and coding. We hope you can join us!
We are welcoming families back to eat lunch with your child beginning on Monday. We have a separate parent table that is against the windows of the cafeteria. Each lunch has staff monitors that will be in the cafeteria if you have any questions. Parents are required to sign in (ID required) in the office. You can either go through the line with your child and purchase an adult lunch or bring something in from outside. A friendly reminder- you are only allowed to have your child join you at the table. Please be aware that with over 150 students in some grade levels, some of the lunchtimes can be on the louder side. :) Our students enjoy this time to socialize with their friends.
We are adding a new feature to Gator Bytes each month to share what students will be learning about in our Resource classes. Please see this information below.
Our awesome Enon PTO also has several fun events planned like Skate Night on 10/12 and Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 29th. Please see the PTO newsletter for specific information.
In closing, I also wanted to share that after over 30 years at Enon, Mrs. Kim Rice is retiring from Enon at the end of October. Mrs. Rice is currently our STEAM teacher (she has also taught grade level classes at Enon) and is much much loved by our school community. We will miss her and appreciate all she has done for our students. If your child/family would like to write a note of appreciation, please send these in to the office and we will make sure to get these to her or you can share your good wishes in person at STEAM Night. In her 30 years here, she has made such an impact and we are truly grateful for her dedication to our students.
In Service,
Dr. Paula Huffman

Promote Respect
At Enon Elementary School, we strive to promote respect and kindness. October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Our students will engage in lessons about promoting respect during classroom lessons with our school counselors. Part of our plan to promote respect is to educate faculty, students, and parents on our expectations of respectful behaviors and how to respond to and report bullying.
Bullying is defined as any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor(s) and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. Bullying is NOT: a conflict between peers of equal power, teasing or horseplay with no intent to harm, or an isolated, individual aggressive action.
If you want to report bullying, please use this form which is also linked on our school website.
Check out this helpful document for additional information.
Thank you for your support as we promote respect at Enon!

Book-O-Ween
BOOK-O-WEEN
It's time for Book-O-Ween again! Each year, at the end of October, we celebrate our love of books and their characters by celebrating Book-O-Ween. Get ready now to dress as your favorite book character on Monday, October 31st and join your classmates and teachers as we play book character BINGO, listen to a storyteller share an exciting tale, and participate in other fun reading adventures! Reminder to families- all costumes must be school appropriate and not involve masks or toy weapons.
Resource Corner
MUSIC
In September, our Musicians reviewed rhythms and music terms from previous years. They have also reviewed instrument technique and care. In October, Kindergarten will begin to explore musical opposites like loud and soft, fast and slow, high and low, as well as different uses for our voices. First Grade will explore dynamics as well as play their first piece on the orff instruments. Second and Third grade will write rhythmic compositions and explore dynamics. Fourth grade will work on choral singing skills and discover minor music. Fifth grade will concentrate on choral skills as we prepare for a winter concert.
PE
Our students will be focusing on the following skills in PE this month:
K- Locomoter skill practice, Gross Motor Assement, self space & general space
1st & 2nd Locomotor skills & short rope skills
3rd, Cooperative activities, Long Rope skills
4th & 5th Long rope skills and fitness testing
Please remind your children to wear athletic shoes to PE and recess. Crocs, sandals and flip flops are not safe at PE or recess. Thank you!
STEAM
Enon Engineers have been learning about the Engineering Design Process in STEAM class. Students are learning to collaborate with a group and use positive communication when working together to solve the given problem. Students will be learning about coding which involves learning coding vocabulary and using coding skills with a robot. It is an exciting time in STEAM! We hope to see you at STEAM night on October 10th for hands-on activities, prizes, and more!
ART
In art we have a new full time teacher Ms. Utzinger and a new itinerant, Mrs. Gunn. Students have been working on dots for International Dot Day with some classes designing Aztec Suns.
Mrs. Gunn has a special message she wanted to share below:
Hello Enon Community! I am Mrs. Gunn, the Art Itinerant. I’m excited to work with your
children, they have shown a lot of enthusiasm about art. This year we will be traveling around
the world through our artwork. Each couple of weeks we will pick a region in the world and
learn about art from different cultures and the various methods in which they create their art.
Presently, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and have learned about art from Panama, Mola Art; Mexico, Aztec Suns; currently, Fernando Llort, El Salvador, La Palma Art.
I do teach in their classroom, so I could always use paper towels or child safe wipes. I ask that they have a paint shirt but I will do my best to let them know the week before they need them.
LIBRARY
K and 1: Author/illustrator studies of David Shannon and Aaron Reynolds. Illustrators tell stories through their art. Reading for information vs. reading for imagination.
2nd: Author study of Adam Rubin and choosing “just right” books.
3rd: Hispanic Heritage Month and study of author/illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh. Using our online catalog to find books in the library. Alphabetizing as the key skill in shelf location in the library.
4th and 5th: Narrative vs. expository nonfiction; Developing independence in navigating the public access catalog (PAC) and locating materials using the Dewey Decimal System
And don't forget about Book-o-Ween on October 31st!
There are also pictures of recent art work around the building of Aztec Suns and dots for International Dot Day.
