Model 1 Sums and differences to 10
Topic H is analogous to Topic C. Students interpret the meaning of subtraction as they solve different problem types involving subtraction. Throughout Module 1, rather than using formal drawings or tape diagrams, students are encouraged to make math drawings that flow from their understanding of the stories. They engage in dialogue to relate their drawings to number sentences and explain the meaning of the subtraction symbol.

❓ Weekly Essential Question(s) How can we see around corners?
We identified a new problem - the message from our device designed last week can’t be seen around a corner. We explored a mirror as part of a redesigned solution to this problem. We redefined our problem and redesign our device using some different materials that might allow a message to travel around a corner.

Mid- Autumn Festival celebration
The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar with a full moon at night, corresponding to this Tuesday, September 21 of the Gregorian calendar this year. On this day, the Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.
We celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in our class by making a moon cake lantern and learn the story of Chang'E.
