FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
Did you know some ways you can help encourage healthy meals for your student?
- Explore – Encourage your child to try new foods at home and school.
- Encourage breakfast – Breakfast fuels learning. School Breakfast is available at all schools. No advance registration necessary! All students are welcome every day!
- Know the options – Schools offer a variety of selections at meals. Talk with your child about healthy choices.
- Encourage good nutrition – Encourage your child to take and eat the fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat milk offered in school meals.
- Taste for yourself – Take time to visit your child at school and enjoy a nutritious school meal.
- Be a healthy role model – Eat a wide variety of healthy foods with your children.
Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at http://foodservices.smsd.org.

UPDATE,
Although there is a lot of political talk surrounding the Affordable Care Act, it is still the law and the most affordable option for those whose employer’s do not offer health insurance. Many SMSD families rely on the ACA for health insurance. As you may be aware, Blue Cross and Blue Shield has pulled out of the marketplace in the Kansas City area. Centene (Sunflower) and Medica are likely to be the providers. Most ACA families will need to re-enroll in order to have continued health coverage. This year the enrollment period for the Healthcare Marketplace is Nov 1-Dec 15th.
***Enroll Kansas will be at SMWest on Nov. 7th and SMNorth on Nov 9th. Times TBD. Enroll Kansas has forwarded the below videos.
Heart Screening
Dear Parents,
As you know, our district’s first priority is the health and safety of our kids, and we are always looking for ways to ensure we are meeting those goals. We wanted to make you aware of a heart screening event that will be held at Shawnee Mission Northweston Saturday, November 11 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
- According to the American Heart Association, at least one-half million children in the U.S. have some form of cardiac problem – that’s 1 in 100 kids.
- These problems range from minor heart issues to sudden cardiac arrest.
- Many parents that have lost a child due to an undiagnosed heart condition didn’t think it would happen to them.
- Knowing if your child has a heart defect is the best prevention.
When you register your child, they will receive an EKG and Echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) with analysis and comprehensive report from a pediatric cardiologist. These potentially life-saving tests normally cost in excess of $1500 but are being made available for the low cost of $129 by removing excessive costs and improved efficiencies.
There are a limited number of appointments available for kids ages 8 and older so don’t delay. Pre-registration is required.
Additional discounts are available for families that qualify. Click Here => request a discount to submit the form. You may also schedule your child’s appointment at: www.ATSHeartCheck.com. Click "Make an Appointment" to access both the scheduling and the discount form.
All discounts are determined and made possible by grants from theStrive for Life Foundation and the Jordan Robert Mann Foundation. If you have questions or require assistance, call ATS at (913) 735-5760 or email: info@athletictestingsolutions.com.
