The Red Hawk Review
October Edition
Support the Hawks, Take a Walk
In an effort to support the school, we are preparing for our third annual Hawk Walk. On October 30th, any student who has paid their 20 dollars towards the event gets a great quality Hawk Walk t-shirt. The Hawk Walk t-shirt will be one of the many great t-shirts this year. The students will be brought together to support the school with games and fun activities such as bubble ball and many others. Also included in the day is food, drinks, and music. There will be hot chocolate, pizza, and many other tasty favorites.
What's even better than that? Students who pay the 20 dollars and participate in the event get to leave school at 12 o'clock. Your donations, a.k.a 20 dollars, will help towards special programs, school improvements, supplies, class needs, class activities, and more.
So why not pay the 20 dollars, get the t-shirt, and spend the first half of the day doing fun activities with your peers?
Brandon Ruiz, a current senior says, " I think it is definitely worth it."
Get your permission slip and your money turned into your forth period teacher. Let this upcoming Friday be worth your while. Support the Hawks and take a walk.

FFA - Not Just for Farmers
There are around 92 students in the Stewarts Creek High School FFA, and each of these students learn something new every day.
This Year the FFA has been very busy. Earlier this year they went to the state fair where they competed with vegetable plants, hay, tobacco, floral design, and livestock. They also competed in dairy judging, horse judging, and a speaking contest.
All year the small animal class has a dog grooming program where the students learn how to properly groom dogs. The general prices are ten dollars for a small dog and fifteen dollars for a large dog. The prices may vary based on what you want done. The money made from this goes towards buying supplies for the classes, food and other supplies for the animals, and to help get to different events. If you would like to make an appointment, you can contact Mrs.Olt.
Later this year they will be going to the National FFA Convention and participating in the Agriculture Literacy Program. The National FFA Convention will take place from October 28th to 31st, and the Agriculture Literacy Program will take place from November 15th to 26th.
The FFA isn't just for farmers; it is filled with a variety of opportunities for all of its members.
Mrs.Olt says, "It gives its students opportunities to expand on the skills they learn in class through competitions and activities".

Alive and Kickin'
Stewarts Creek High School's girl's soccer team managed to make school history with the 1-0 win over Siegel in District 7-AAA semifinal.
The game became more and more intense as the clocked ticked away with no points yet to be placed on the board. Both teams' determination shone through as the game was brought into overtime.
With no minutes to spare, it all came down to penalty kicks. Five players from each team stepped up to the plate. Junior goalkeeper, Lena Alakabi, rescued the Lady Red Hawks from defeat and deflected the 5th kicker's shot from Siegel.
Lady Red Hawk mid-fielder, Paige Loveless, sealed the game with the final shot, and Stewarts Creek beat the Stars in a 1-0 battle for the gold.
On October 16th, the Lady Red Hawks traveled to Richard Siegel Soccer Complex to battle the Oakland Patriots for the District 7-AAA championship. The Red Hawks led the game 1-0, but the Patriots prevailed in the second half and won 3-1.
Although Stewarts Creek placed 2nd in the tournament, they still went to regionals and faced Lincoln County. The Falcons took the victory over Stewarts Creek ending the Lady Red Hawks' season.
As tears were flowing, Stewarts Creek High School's Lady Red Hawk's can certainly agree that they left their hearts on the field this season. They may not have won regionals, but they advanced further than any other team has done in Stewarts Creek history.
Coach Westover, the Lady Red Hawk's first-year girl's soccer coach, expressed how fun it was just to be along for the ride on the girl's venture this season.
He was asked what his goal for next season was and Westover simply proclaimed, "Our goal is to make it back to the District Championship and focus on getting out of district."
Congratulations Lady Red Hawk's for making history! Practice makes perfect. Talk with your feet, and play with your heart.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Key Club is participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF; they will be collecting donations to be used for Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus vaccines.
Many of the Key Club members are preparing to Trick-or-Treat for a good cause. They have distributed flyers throughout their assigned neighborhoods during the week to explain what the donations will be used for. This allows the citizens to prepare and keeps the members collecting more efficient. On Halloween, all who signed up will go trick-or-treating, but instead of candy they will be collecting small change.
The Vice-President of Key Club, Kayla Newton, explained, "Not only is it a lot of fun, but it's also a great opportunity to help a charitable organization."
The proceeds will be used by UNICEF to treat MNT, Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus. They have determined that just $1.80 will provide three doses of the vaccine to communities in developing countries. Just $18 can save the lives of 10 people.

Future Teachers of America
Have you ever thought of being a teacher? Then Future Teachers of America (FTA) is the club for you. FTA is a new club to Stewarts Creek High School this year.
In FTA, you will be participating in many exciting activities. For example, you will be shadowing teachers and encouraging literacy in the elementary schools.
FTA offers high schools a unique opportunity to try out teaching in the real world before you actually commit to that in college. Not only that, but you will be earning community service hours, which will look great on college applications, and it will also go towards your Tennessee promise if you are a senior.
So…Who is hosting it, and how does it work? Mr. Marlatt is the sponsoring teacher for FTA, application deadline was on October 23. You must have a 3.0 GPA, and you had to get two teacher recommendations including one academic and one elective.
So you turned in an application, now what? The first meeting will be held at some point in the first week of November. You will receive an invitation to this meeting if you have been chosen to be in the club.

Leaving Your Mark
The Stewarts Creek High School Legacy Project, inspired by Hunter Bullock, is a monument to all the students in previous years who have graduated.
The monument will be built with bricks which can be bought for $50 each. They will be placed on the school entry way and are creating this as a monument for past students. Also for any businesses who want to be included, bricks can be bought for $200. Six lines of text and the company's logo will be engraved on the brick.
They will begin building this monument when enough bricks are bought to complete this design. Possible personalizations on the brick include your name, date of graduation, class, the name of a loved one, or a special message commemorating your days at Stewarts Creek High School. Up to three lines of text may be engraved into the brick for students.
Hunter Bullock came up with this idea for this project and encourages others to buy a brick and leave your mark on the school by stating, "students should do it because it will be there forever."
It's truly leaving your mark on history and a legacy for other students to witness because here we are all one team.

Too Ghoul For School
The Cultural Diversity Club is hosting a costume contest where students can dress up in their best Syfy, comic book, or anime costume.
On October 30th, all participants will be able to compete for a fifty dollar gift card. Students will be judged on effort, creativity, and character portrayal.
Students who want to participate in the contest portion of the competition will pay a five dollar entrance fee. Those who would like to just dress up will only have to pay a three dollar fee.
"This will be a great way to introduce our club to students who may not know that we exist," claims the club's sponsor, Michael Morrow.
Second and third place winners will also have the opportunity to enjoy prizes, so everyone should come out and participate.
