Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. is known for his role in the progess of civil rights using non-violence civil disobedience. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He also helped found the SCLC. The thing everybody most remembers from him is his "I Have a Dream" speech on the March on Washington. He was assassinated 5 years later.
Civil Rights Act
The United States government outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This law took effect on July2, 1964. Powers given to enforce the act were weak right away. It started to really catch affect years and years later. The act was signed by president Lyndon B. Johnson.
Southern Christian Leadership Conference
SCLC is an African-American civil rights organization. The SCLC had a huge role in the American Civil Rights Movement. On January 10, 1957, following the Montgumery Bus Boycott, Martin Luther King Jr. founded the SCLC.
Black Panthers
This is a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization. This party was active from 1969 to 1972. Their core practice was its armed citizen patrols to monitor the behavior of police officials. The leader of this group was Huey P. Newton. The government feared this group greatly because they thought they were to biggest threat to the governments security.
