Scoring: What goes into it, and what are caption awards?
There are six judges, divided into three categories:
MUSIC
Music Individual (20.0 total points to work with and score is multiplied by .5)
Music Ensemble (20.0 total points to work with and score is multiplied by 1.25)
The group with the highest combined score of these judges wins the Best Music Caption award in their class
GENERAL EFFECT
Music General Effect (20.0 total points to work with and score is multiplied by 1.25)
Visual General Effect (20.0 total points to work with)
The group with the highest combined score of these judges wins the Best General Effect Caption award in their class
VISUAL
Visual Individual (20.0 total points to work with and score is multiplied by .5)
Visual Ensemble (20.0 total points to work with and score is multiplied by .5)
The group with the highest combined score of these judges wins the Best Visual Caption award in their class
You add all those up and...poof! There's your score! Of course it's more complicated than that however. Each judge's points are based in two categories: Design Analysis and Achievement Analysis. While you would think "So 50% of my student's total points are based on WHAT you gave them to perform?" that's not the entire story. You see, while we are judged on content we are only given credit for what the judge can understand of our content. It's the job of the staff to ensure that the content is easy to understand when the students perform well - we've never had a problem in this category before. And as the students achieve at a higher level those small nuanced details of our design start to shine through. So, in short, the design score is not a static number like gymnastics.
Remember scoring is subjective and could change from week to week, but ultimately excellence is not subjective. Our goal is to be such well trained performers that regardless of how we feel the show went, the audience and judges see a band of state caliber the entire production.
Practice is what you do outside of rehearsal
Re-HEAR-sal - We rehearse from 6-9 each night. that's to re-hear the show in a way we haven't before. To train the kids who to listen for and when. To teach them how to perform what they've been given.
Practice - Is the self guided or small group effort to increase individual skills so their talent levels when they enter rehearsal are better than the day before.
I cannot stress to the students enough that the more they put into this program the more they will get out of it...woodshed those parts, get out on that parking lot and chalk your spots and practice on your own. Your kids are equipped with tools to succeed. This season will be what we make of it, and there is no better feeling performing knowing you have prepared to the highest degree!

- Every student receives a free tshirt and MUST order one with a form.

Sepetmber 19th will now be a rehearsal date

- Students will have September 17th off instead.
Fall Break - "A break from academics...not activities!"
Be sure to check your calendar for fall break. We have some big days planned, however there is still time for your family to plan a quick weekend getaway or simply allowing your student to get some extra rest. The Saturday leading us out of fall break is ISSMA Regional, in order to give ourselves the highest chance of advancing to the next level, your child needs to be at 100% of these rehearsals. We hope that, since you've had this since April, you've had ample time to prepare!
