Letter to families of potential English Language Learners
Dear Parents /Guardians:
The Novi Community School District is committed to providing instructional programs that will meet the needs of all students in our schools. We have developed an English language development (ELD) program, also known as an ESL program, that includes academic instruction in order to address the needs of English Learners.
The responses you provided during the enrollment process to the Novi Community School District informed us that your student might be eligible for English language services. Specifically, you indicated that English is not the only language spoken in your home environment or by your student. Federal and Michigan state law then required that the Novi Community School District administer the WIDA Screener or the WIDA W-APT test to measure the English Language proficiency of your student. Based on those test results, your student may be entered into the English Language Development Program at the Novi Community School District.
The WIDA English Screener is mandated by the State of Michigan for all K-12 students from bilingual homes. It is used to assess students in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and comprehension of the English language.
Newly enrolled students at Novi Community schools for the 2022-2023 school year need to be screened for English proficiency as soon as possible after enrollment.
