Readings 18th Sunday of Ordinary Time
1st Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23
2nd Reading: St Paul to the Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11
Gospel: Luke 12:13-21
Welcome to the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary & St Matthew
Jesus says, “one’s life does not consist of possessions,” I still struggle with this … perhaps, I’m not the only one. I want the joy and freedom of a saint like St. Francis of Assisi, but I am slow to embrace the voluntary poverty through which that joy and freedom flourished.
Pope Francis Monthly Intention: For the elderly
We pray for the elderly, who represent the roots and memory of a people; may their experience and wisdom help young people to look towards the future with hope and responsibility.
Over the past week we have farewelled a number of parishioners
Kian Daniel Almoite; Roland (Roly) Coombes, Molly Rafferty, and Peter Hodgkinson.
Kian was the baby son of Joanne & Arnel whose funeral prayers were offered last Monday.
Our sympathy to Cecelia Coombes and her children and grand children following Roly's death. Roly's Requiem was held today (Friday) at the Cathedral.
Molly (nee Herlihy) is mother of Rebecca Hollows and Aunty and Godmother to Andrea Savage. Molly's Requiem will be tomorrow at the Cathedral.
Peter Hodgkinson is father to Angela who teaches at Jubilee Early Childhood Centre. His Requiem will be tomorrow at St Pauls Ngaruawahia.
May Kian, Roly, Molly, and Peter rest in peace.
Please remember all families who have lost their loved ones in our parish recently.
This weekend we welcome Loren O'Sullivan who will speak about her volunteer experience in Latin America with NPH New Zealand. NPH is a Catholic charity, which supports vulnerable children and families across Latin America. To find more: www.nph-nz.org or call 09 216 0635

Palliative care grossly underfunded while “assisted dying” is a Claytons' choice
Dr John Kleinsman of the NZ Catholic bishops' last week made some statements in the media in response to the NZ Ministry of Health providing data on the number of people seeking and carrying out euthanasia since last November. The Health Ministry announcement is here: https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/life-stages/assisted-dying-service/assisted-dying-service-data-and-reporting
With John’s help, I put together his comments on this issue and we have issued a statement, which is on the NZCBC website here: https://www.catholic.org.nz/news/media-releases/eolc-palliative-claytons/
