Your RV Life Show Intro
It is driving season! Please check your tires.
Summer-time is peak traveling time for you R.V.ers and because y'all, our customers, are the best customers on planet Earth, we truly want y'all to be as safe as possible while on the road! Please make sure that your tires are properly maintained, as thousands of accidents a year are blamed on faulty tire maintenance. Look at the pictures below to see a few of the tires we have encountered in the past month. Then, follow these simple steps to ensure tire safety:
- Visually inspect the tire for ANY sidewall cracks and replace ALL of the tires if any cracks are noticed.
- Check your tire pressure before you hit the road, the proper tire pressures are located on a data tag stuck to the exterior sidewall on the left front corner of the travel trailer or 5th wheel. Motorhome tire pressure is typically beside the driver’s seat on the wall.
- If your tires are over 5 years old, simply replace them. Mine ( Rodney’s) were 3 years old and properly inflated but they still blew out (cheap tire brand) so don’t skimp on yer tires!
- Consider the purchase of a tire monitor system which is far less than the cost of the damage caused by tire blow outs
- Remember above all else: RVing is an adventure not a hay ride! Well … sometimes.
This is the beginning of ozonolisis
Notice the horizontal striations in the lower right corner of the "M"?
Running under inflated tires breaks down the sidewalls
AKA "kissing cousins"
Severe or irregular tread wear
This tire is a sad (not to mention dangerous) tire with wear that can indicate a bent axle or loose/worn axle bearings
How To: Find the date of your tires
Referencing the image below, DOT is the first lettering you see, followed by the letter and number combinations that identify the manufacture plant and code to the right. You want to find the 4-digit number that tells us the date. This tire's date is "2602", which means that the tire was made during the 26th week of the year 2002.
