Second Grade News
Week of April 9-13
Reading/Language Arts
- This week we are reading realistic fiction stories about being good citizens in a community. This week's reading fit in perfectly with what we are learning in Junior Achievement from our community volunteer, Mr. Amundson. We discussed ways that we can help out our community and what it means to be a good citizen.
- Our reading skill this week is point of view. We learned how to identify which point of view a story is told from and how that influences the story. To practice this skill, we read a variety of books, found the point of view and wrote about how the story would be different if someone else were to tell the story. Together we thought about the familiar story of Jack and the Beanstalk and retold the story from a different point of view.
- Lastly, we practiced writing from different view points and then discussed how the story might be different because of who is telling the story.
- This week we focused on -ou, -ow patterns during our word work time.
Math
This week we are focusing on data sets and finding the median, mode, and the range of each set of data. The students are familiar with data sets since we just finished our units on graphing last week.
We did a lot of different hands-on activities with data sets and finding the median, mode, and range. The students got to play cards, be scientists that counted puffin eggs, and participated in the Olympics. We also discussed how these data sets are actually used in real life and how the information we collected could be applied to different jobs and circumstances.
Playing Cards
2nd graders played cards and charted their results. Then, they found the range and mode of their cards.
Finding puffin eggs
2nd graders read that scientists are counting puffin eggs to determine how endangered the species are. They found "puffin eggs" and then charted the numbers they found, solving the median, mode, and range of the numbers.
Making Donuts!
Mr. Amundson came to talk to us about being apart of a community and how we can contribute to the community. One way to make a community better is to be a baker. However, people want to buy quality donuts. Students participated in making quality donuts. Then, they had to come up with new and creative flavors to sell.
Social Studies
This week we are learning about the continents and oceans, their names, and where they are located. We are also learning how to read maps and where Hendricks is located. We are learning about our town, state, and country.
