One Foot in Each Year...

This time of year the energy and excitement for the summer ahead pulses through the building. It's also the time where we find ourselves trying to squeeze in one last moment with the students we've grown to love during the school year and looking for time to tackle all of those end-of-the-year "must do"s. Hang in there, and savor these moments. If you're anything like the Hutchisons, by the time July rolls along, the kids (and often adults) are wondering when school starts again so that they can see all of their friends in one place!

As we look to wrap up this school year, here are a few quick reminders about things to keep in mind for the next week or so:

  • Report cards will sent home with students on the last day of school. Parents are welcome to access grades online as of 8:00am on Thursday the 8th, but a paper copy will be sent home.
  • Spring MAP data will go home with student report cards, so keep an eye out for them in all 2nd-5th grade envelopes.
  • Our annual Meet the Team Day will take place next Tuesday. This will give our students a chance to visit a classroom in the next grade level and to learn a bit about what life at Avoca West will look like as they are one year older!
  • Keep those fingers and toes crossed that Mother Nature gives us another beautiful day for our End-of-the-Year Picnic next Thursday. You should have received information about the timing and other details from your child's room parent. If not, please reach out to him/her!

Thank you Volunteers!

We have been blessed this year with so many parents who are willing and able to step in a help with our daily routines at Avoca West and with our special events. I am always amazed by how quickly a re-scheduled event (like 4th and 5th grade Olympics due to impending rain!) can turn out people willing to pop by and lend a hand. Thank you! If you volunteered for our Olympics and weren't able to make it on the date change, we believe "it's the thought that counts!" Thank you!

Thank you for those parents who are currently working on the 5th grade party for tomorrow and for those who came this afternoon (100% volunteer showing!!) for the 1st-3rd grade Field Day. We honestly couldn't do it without you! I'm sure I'm forgetting many events, parents, community volunteers, but please know how valued you are!

Planning for the 2017-2018 School Year

We are already deep into the planning and preparation for an amazing 2017-2018 school year. Here are some highlights to keep in mind:

  • Teacher assignment letters will be mailed home Friday, August 11th. Though we do our best to be proactive in building class lists before the summer begins, we cannot make lists final until we know of students who will be moving in, moving out, or staff changes that we might not even know of yet! Please know we are committed to making sure each child has a positive school year and teachers will be eagerly awaiting to welcome their new group of students!
  • We will be having a supply drop off/Meet the teacher day again in August prior to students beginning. This will be optional, so don't stress out if your family is still squeezing in one last trip or event away before school begins. More information to follow about the timing!
  • There will be new changes for Math at Avoca West for next year! Our team has been actively working during the year and will continue in the summer to make sure that our staff members have the resources they need to best teach the grade level standards. Summer newsletters (check those inboxes) will contain additional information about our program and how we will plan to differentiate for the variety of learners within the classroom using a guided math approach. We will also be hosting parent math nights early in the year to give parents a taste of what instruction looks like. Stay tuned!
  • Communication and Engagement is something that we've been working on throughout the district in committee work throughout this school year as well. In addition to a new website next year, parents can expect to see proactive changes in what we communicate and where parents can find the information they need. Stay tuned (another summer newsletter) to learn more about our recommendations!
  • Visible Learning will still be a focus for our building next year and will be making its way to Marie Murphy as well. What does this mean for your child? We'll be purposefully building a greater sense of student ownership of their learning so that they know what they're learning and why/how it connects to the greater world, setting goals for themselves, and becoming comfortable with taking risks...and even failing! Check back through previous Avoca West News for more information about Visible Learning in action!

Thank you for a wonderful school year and for your trust in our staff members to plan for another great adventure next year!
