Jefferson Middle School
The Cyclone Watch - March 2020
Principal Updates
1. If students are present everyday the last 60 days of school, they will automatically qualify for the end of the year attendance party for their grade level. All students with 90% attendance or better will also qualify.
2. We will have competitions for teams throughout the building every two weeks. The team with the best attendance for the given two week period will receive various rewards. These will include options such as ice cream, pixie sticks, and cookies.
3. Students can track their teams progress weekly in the showcase across from the main office.
Please encourage your child to help their team win the bi-weekly prizes and achieve our 60 day challenge. Our goal is for 90% of our students to attend at least 90% of the time. We can reach that goal by completing the challenge.
A quick shout out to our teachers for all of their hard work so far this year. Our team has diligently been developing Project Based Learning opportunities and STEAM electives as part of our preparation for becoming a STEAM Academy. Your students are receiving unique and exciting opportunities for hands on learning that inspires creativity and critical thinking. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated team of professionals.
As we finally start moving in to spring weather, please remind your student of our expectations for appropriate attire. We want all students to have a comfortable and appropriate appearance each day for successful learning. If in doubt, please ask your student to not wear the outfit to school.
6th Grade Curriculum Update
Math 6:
In Math 6 with Ms. Urie, Ms. Cooper, and Mrs. Boggs, students have been working through their Equations Unit. Throughout this unit students write, solve, and graph equations. The test is scheduled for March 12th. After the test, the students will work independently on a project to practice skills from the Equations Unit. On March 13th, we will celebrate and learn about Pi! Students who attend the Pi Day Extravaganza will earn Extra Credit from their math teacher.
Advanced Math 6:
In Advanced Math 6 with Ms. Urie and Mrs. Boggs, students have been working through their Stretching and Shrinking Unit. Students will learn about ratios, proportions, and scale factor and will study how to use triangles to find heights of similar objects. On Tuesday, March 10th, Ms. Urie and Mrs. Boggs would like to take the Advanced 6th Grade Math students on a walking field trip to the Mizzou columns. On this trip, students will utilize the skills they have learned to find the height of a Mizzou column. The test is scheduled for March 6th. On March 13th, we will celebrate and learn about Pi! Students who attend the Pi Day Extravaganza will earn Extra Credit from their math teacher.
Science:
In Science class, Students are studying Energy and will test on it the first week of March. They are using the knowledge about what they have learned from class and our recent guest speaker: Columbia Water and Light to connect their learning to their home environment. Many students have recently brought home an Energy Efficiency kit that they can use to improve or check the efficiency of their homes. They will use their understanding to complete multiple energy projects/labs during the month of March.
Social Studies:
We were so impressed with all the ancient Egypt projects! We can tell that students had worked very hard! Our next unit is Ancient India and the Indus River Valley Civilization. We will discuss the geography, trade, the Caste System, and the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism. As always, please let us know if you have any questions!
English:
In English, we are completing our research papers. Students selected a topic to research and had to use both print and digital sources to find, paraphrase, and cite information for their papers. Our next unit will be our Titanic Unit. In this unit, students will learn everything about the Titanic from the time it was built till it sank. They will also learn about different individuals who had a major part in making or sailing the Titanic. With this knowledge, students will have to pick one individual to blame for the disaster and use their evidence to write a paper and explain why their chosen person is to blame.

Notes From The School Nurse
FEBRUARY IS DENTAL HEALTH MONTH!
Dental care is an integral part a child’s health. To protect your child’s teeth and encourage good oral health, the American Dental Association recommends parents provide children with a balanced diet, limit snacks, brush twice daily and have regular dental checkups every 6 months. Good dental health is important for proper chewing, speaking and appearance.
If you need help with dental care or need dental supplies please contact the school nurse.
***Immunizations for all 7th grade students***
Spring Break would be a good time to get these mandatory vaccines!
Vaccination Reminder: All 7th grade students are required to have a Tdap vaccine and a meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine BEFORE they begin 8th grade. It is not too early to get this vaccine right now. The health department is available to give this vaccine between 8 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday or your physician can give this vaccine. Written proof of this vaccine must be given to the school nurse. Your student will not be permitted to begin school next fall if they have not received this vaccine. If a student is attending summer school, they must receive these two vaccines before summer school begins. Please email, fax, scan, or mail written proof from your pediatrician or clinic to the school. The address, phone number, and online link to the health department is provided for your convenience. A student can be given these vaccinations anytime after they turn 10 years old.
