First Grade
Parents and guardians, as we finish out the third grading period, your child will now transition to reading text independently on all reading assessments. This is a skill required in second grade and it is vital that your child build stamina in their reading at this time.
Practicing addition and subtraction facts will help your child in math as we are learning about comparing numbers and the strategies of addition and subtraction. Learning how to add and subtract multiples of ten from any number less than 120 is a focus of this quarter’s math lessons. For example, 40 more than 27 equals 67. 30 less than 84 equals 54.
In science your child will be learning about living and nonliving things. Later, we will discuss basic needs of living things and planting seeds. We are hoping to get ladybug larvae to learn about their life cycle.
Special thanks to the great chaperones that helped with our field trip to Athens Theater. We couldn’t do it without you. What field trip is coming up? The trip to the Marine Science Center is planned for Feb. 20 and Feb. 21. Ms. Hedman, Mrs. Pallady, and Mrs. Payler will go on Feb. 20. Mr. Pierre, Mrs. Schicker, and Mrs. Yowell will go on Feb. 21. Watch for information on your child’s newsletter and weekly folder! A permission form will be sent home on Feb.3. Permission forms and payment are due on Friday, February 14.
Second Grade
Science: Students are still discovering how various forms of energy are obtained and used in the world. Next up will be investigations with force and motion.
Math: The students have been: identifying the place values of digits up to 1,000; experiencing ways to represent numbers so they can read and write them; comparing numbers with relationship to place values.
Social Studies: They have been discussing why people from various countries today would choose to leave their home country to immigrate to the USA.
ELA: They are identifying story structure and how characters respond to major events.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is getting their brains worked out. We have been working on adding and subtracting fractions greater than 1 whole. Yes! Fractions greater than 1 whole is the new term used for improper fractions or mixed numbers. Soon we will be learning how to multiply fractions. Keep working on learning your multiplication facts. In addition, our fourth grade scientists are learning about the different types of energy. We have been working with some hands-on investigations. Can you ask them how do light and sound travel? How about, if there is such thing as cold energy? Don’t forget we have a field trip coming up. Turn in your money and permission slips to your teacher or office. Online payments are also accepted. Remember, “the more you read, the more places you will go”. Ask your child to read every day for 20 minutes and ask them about what they read.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is proud of all your science fair projects and would like to congratulate our winners. They will participate in the school science fair February 25, during the day at the end of the month. :

Book Fair!
Come explore and shop the new book titles at our jungle themed book fair March 5th through March 12th. Students will be invited to walk through the book fair with their class at a scheduled book browse. They will be invited to make a ‘wish list’ to bring home to share with you. A new feature is E-Wallet. It is a new cash free option that makes it easy and secure for students to purchase books. It’s safe, secure and free to set up. It is a great alternative to sending kids to school with cash and you can set a spending limit. Any unused funds are released back to you. More details will be sent with our book fair flyers. Look for our book fair flyer coming home in the next few weeks.
The Court Report
We are just winding down our track & field unit and getting ready to kick off into various activities. Coach Farmer is getting ready for his soccer unit, Coach Warfield is gearing up for some volleyball and Coach Washburn is going to start his orienteering unit.
Track & Field was so exciting! It was so rewarding to see how much better everybody got at the various stations. The competitions at the events throughout the unit were fun and to see who walked away with the ribbon for the day.
Lots of jackets still being left in PE, put a name in them and that helps them get returned. Continue to work on tying shoes as being prepared and shoes ready to go when coming to PE as a class is a house point!
Healthy Tip: Get into a family exercise routine go for a walk together, talk about the day, lots of water and keep on moving!

Primer grado
