The Great Aspects
Social Media has been a revolutionary idea in the 21st century people have always used it to communicate effectively and efficiently. The different forms of this great invention can be seen throughout the world. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are just a few that can be named in the long list. People can use it to raise awareness about a problem that is affecting a large number of people. These include political conflicts and natural disasters. Organizations like the UN or United Way use it to raise awareness for people to help certain affected countries or regions. An example would be the organizations that are trying to help Haiti after the natural disaster they faced recently.
The Horrifying Aspects
Social Media is the root of cyber-bullying, which is a form of hurting people via texts, images, comments, etc. What the victim does can be unspeakable, as the consequences can be catastrophic. People commit suicide, abuse drugs, and change their character completely to the liking of others, whose opinion is not their priority. People make reckless decisions due to several different reasons; they have been bullied before, have been peer-pressured, or just dislike the person due to jealousy.
Parents and Their Importance
Many people do not realize the importance of speaking to a trusted adult when in a bullying situation. This is a setback, as many people would be mentally and physically better when people support them. Also, it is easier for someone that is a trusted adult to confront a bully. Sometimes they do not have to confront them either; under the guidance of their advice, someone would fix a problem without having to stress out too much.
Several social media accounts have age restrictions, which are ignored majority of the time. These age limits should be considered before making an account. If parents do agree to their child having a social media account, they should be checking their child's device often to see any suspicious activity.
