School Update - Summer Happenings
We have had an extremely busy summer at St. John School and we are very excited for the new school year. The faculty, staff and administration take great pride in working together with you to make St. John School the best that it can be. Not only do we recognize and celebrate the ways we are successful, we continue to look for ways in which we can improve. Below you will find some highlights of the summer and previews for the upcoming year.
Catholicity
At the heart of everything we do at St. John School is our Catholic faith. Last year, we initiated Faith Families and they were met with such great success that they will continue into this school year. Students and staff will remain in the same families, with new members joining. Our faith family groups will focus on different virtues each month, learning about individual saints along the way. After a Faith Family Kick-Off and Reunion in August, we will focus on “faith” while learning about St. Martha in September.
We are also excited to be incorporating a new religion program: Blest Are We.
Building and Grounds
If you have driven down Bishop Street this summer, you know that a lot has been happening in this area. Along with improvements to the church flooring and a major drainage project on the entire property, Mr. Baummer and his team have freshly painted our halls, bathrooms and auditorium. Some work has also been done on our playground, with more to come once all of the drainage work is complete. In order to avoid any damage, our new water fountains will be installed shortly after the start of the school year.
Mathematics
Writing
Last year you learned that we were implementing Mentor Sentences into all grade levels after a successful pilot year by Mrs. Russell. I'm pleased to report the class using this program for two consecutive years showed the following average growth on the Iowa Assessments from 4th grade to 5th grade:
Written Expression = +1.98 Grade Equivalent Levels
Conventions of Writing = + 1.4 Grade Equivalent Levels
This is a great program that will continue at all grade levels.
Safety and Security
This continues to be of extreme importance to each and every one of our faculty and staff. We will continue to speak with the children regularly about ways they can stay safe at school and home, holding drills regularly. The intent of these drills is never to scare, but rather to prepare our children for what to do in any type of emergency.
If you ever see something that seems unsafe or that can be improved upon, please do not hesitate to say something. We are all one village working together for all of our students.
