Help Us Fill the Box! Food Drive Hosted by 4th Grade Student Lighthouse Team

Claxton's 4th Grade Student Lighthouse Team is hosting a Food Drive to help local families this season. Through Thursday, 12/19, our students are collecting donations of canned and boxed food. Please drop off your donations in the box in Claxton's lobby. Let's fill it up! Thanks for your help!

Tour Guides Needed! No Experience Required…

Giving tours to prospective families is a great way to learn more about your school and a wonderful way to give back to Claxton. Tours are usually conducted on Tuesdays at 9am and last 45-60 minutes. Volunteers will sign up for one or two of these tours before the end of the year. Tour guides are also needed for our annual Open House, scheduled for January 28-30, 2020.

An optional “training tour” will be available on Tuesday, January 14th at 9am for those interested. Please sign up here. Thank you!

Math Kangaroo Contest

Claxton is hosting the Math Kangaroo competition this coming spring, thanks to parent organizer Leslie Hayes! Registration is open now through Sun, 12/15/19. Math Kangaroo is an international mathematical competition where over 50 countries are represented. The competition will be held after school on THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 2020.

More about Math Kangaroo--
  • 75 minute multiple choice test, available for grades 1-5.

  • Most questions are word problems. Sample problems and practice tests for each grade level can be found at

  • Each participant receives a t-shirt, a certificate, and a gift on the test day.

  • National and state winners are awarded medals and ribbons in May.

The participation fee is $21. Scholarships are available. Online registration is currently limited to 10 participants but we hope to increase that number if more students are interested. To register or if you have any questions, contact Leslie Hayes at

Call for Proposals for Spring 2020 ASA

Share your knowledge and inspire our Claxton students through our After School Arts Program! Our Spring 2020 Call for Proposals is here. We have had many awesome classes in the past taught by Claxton family members and Claxton staff and can't wait to see what the new year brings. Please share this invitation for new class ideas with friends, family, and community!

[For Spring 2020 ASA, class catalogs will be available in mid-January. Registration will open on Sun, 1/26 at 8:00pm and close on Sun, 2/2 at 8:00pm. Classes will begin the week of Feb 10-13.]

Please contact Miriam Scott at if you have any questions or would like to discuss anything about the program or class ideas.

Chaperoning and Other Volunteering at Claxton

We welcome and appreciate our volunteers! If you wish to volunteer at any time, there are a couple of requirements that need to be completed in advance.

1) Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a supervising chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for checks to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to get yours started.

2) Also, all volunteers need to attend a brief (~30min) Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so you can go ahead and check the calendar. Please see below for the next training sessions or check this year's full calendar HERE. Trainings take place in the Boardroom at Asheville City Schools' Central Office at 85 Mountain Street unless otherwise noted. No registration is required to attend the training.
