CHS Family Update
2/4/19
We made it to the halfway mark...
We are officially halfway through the school year. We now face the second half with poise and focus. I had the pleasure of attending the equestrian meet at the Oregon Horse Center. I took my daughter Amelia and spent time walking around petting horses and connecting with families. Thank you Katy McAullife for showing us around. It was a great bit of fun.
Please be sure to read up on what happens when we have snow days. We just might have one or two this week.
In The Know
National School Counseling Week - Hey hey hey, what do you know? It's National School Counseling week February 4-8, 2019. This week is sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), and it highlights the unique contribution of school counselors within our school systems, and the tremendous impact they can have in helping students achieve school success, plan for a career, and lead healthy lives. We are fortunate to have a dedicated and professional counseling staff. I am honored to work with each of them on any given day. Please take an opportunity to let our counselors know how much you appreciate their work, how much you value them, and the role they serve.
Phone Scam - A parent of one of our students, called this week to let us know that they received a phone call from an individual saying that in Dec. their student signed up for an SAT Prep Course when this "individual" had come to Churchill. The "individual" proceeded to ask/tell this parent that they would be charging their credit card for this course. The parent questioned this "individual" when they talked about charging their credit card and they then hung up. The parent thankfully realized this was a scam, but wanted to let us know that this happened and to let other parents know. The parent was concerned that they knew their student's name, their landline number, that their student attended CHS, and that they are using CHS's name to scam people. More than anything we just don't want another parent to fall for this.
Ergon Student Exchange - seeks families to host a 16-17 year-old Italian student during the next school year, 2019-20, for either a semester or the school year. Ergon’s program ensures a true cross-cultural opportunity: Italian families offer your son or daughter a direct exposure to Italian culture through an all-expenses paid summer vacation. Ergon sponsors the flight!
We specialize in a rigorous selection process and carefully match students with host families. We’ve had students at Churchill and all 4J high schools. Our current and former Eugene host families are happy to share their experiences. Please email Kim O’Brien, Eugene coordinator, at kobrien334@comcast.net

Host an Italian student and your son or daughter will be invited to Italy!

No news = No change. If schools and buses are on their regular schedule, there will NOT be an announcement.
School schedule:
School Closure = No school for students. Decision about afternoon/evening activities will be made by noon.
Two-Hour Delay: School starts two hours late and ends at the usual school dismissal time. If a delay occurs on an early release Friday, school will still be dismissed at the early release time.
Snow Routes: Some school bus routes have alternate “snow routes” that avoid higher and steeper elevations. If you need information about your student’s bus route, please see www.4j.lane.edu/transportation/snowroutes.
Parent Choice: Please consider the road conditions in your own area in making your decision about school attendance, and notify the school if your student will be staying home. Parents’ decisions about absences for weather-related safety reasons will be honored.

Swim Team - We had a great meet on Friday with both boys and girls winning against Crater and Ashland in a three-way meet. Districts is going to be really exciting on on Saturday the 9th (9am-1pm) so we hope you can make it to Willamalane to support all these swimmers! They definitely notice when their teachers are in the stands! Congratulations to Gio, Finn, Davis and Charley for setting a new 400 freestyle relay record on Friday night! Also congratulations to Braden, Finn, Charley and Hunter for setting a new record in the 200 medley relay. And for individual records, congratulations to Charley Page-Jones for setting a new record in the 100 backstroke and smashing the record in the 200 individual medley.
Thespians Competition - Our own Thespians just finished up with the Regional's Competition and we have students going to state. Congratulations go out to Devon Bahr who will be competing at the State Tournament in both Solo Acting and Solo Musical categories. Many others received high scores with the acting group consisting of Ejaiya Davos, Rogan DeCalesta, Sean Burke, Emily Martini and Ryan Dalimore getting a near perfect score and just missing out on qualifying. We are so proud of our acting students and all the growth and dedication they have shown over the years.
Equestrian - We have a dedicated group of equestrians. I had the chance to visit the competition this weekend and was very intrigued with how the meet runs itself. Katy McAullife leads a great club and supports some pretty awesome students. Both Abby Sheppler and senior captain Jade Farley scored points in every event of this weekend's Oregon High School Equestrian meet at the Oregon horse center. Abby shows Cooper, and Jade's horse is Jingles.
Downing Street Singers - Amazing performances! Thank you for getting our Student Engagement conference off to a great start. I think you opened an eye or two when staff walked into the library and saw an amazing show in progress. You definitely got us off to an excellent start. Thank you!
Presenters - I would like to thank every presenter for your time and commitment to offering a session. We received very positive reviews of the sessions and are looking forward to keeping this mode of professional development alive and well. If you weren't here, you definitely missed Churchill, Kennedy, and ATA staff at their best. It was a great day. Matt Myers, Michael Sterling, Misael Flores, Sarah Ruggiero, Helen Haberman, Robert Wood, Sherry Sterling, Laura Archibald, April Nelson, Marie Scull, Erin Crews, Misty Jackson, Rob Hess, Barbara Siemens, Eve Hannah, Keri Pilgrim Ricker, and Darcy Strange.
Misael Flores - Thank you for your hard work putting the Youth Action Council together for our student panel and for moderating the session. Your focus and leadership are greatly appreciated. The students presented very well and shared some great personal insights. It is important to know what our students are thinking and experiencing. This was fantastic. Thank you
Alex Patton - Thank you for ensuring that we were set up for success. You had students available and at the ready when we needed them for our Friday PD. Thank you for your partnership. I really appreciate knowing that the theater is handled with tact, professionalism and commitment.
Keith Fjordbeck - Thank you for supporting a great number of our staff and district staff on Friday. We had a lot going on and you are always ensuring that Churchill stands ready to receive visitors. You make sure that everything is set up and ready to go. You also response to any need quickly and with a sense of humor. I truly appreciate you.
