Character Strong - Family Dares

I hope you all had a chance to participate in last week's family dare: Book Club.

Please consider joining us in this week's family dare: Mix Tape. Last weekend, my daughters and I celebrated our annual Daddy Daughter Dance. Each winter, we look forward to this event at their school. However, due to COVID, we had to get creative and recreate this experience in our own home. This gave us the opportunity to create a "mix tape" of songs that mean something to us. It was a great experience. I encourage you all to join me in trying this week's family dare. Spring Pictures Coming Up - 2/23 and 2/24

Spring pictures are scheduled for February 23rd and 24th. We will be taking individual pictures that parents can order through Lifetouch. We will also be taking class pictures during the day. To respect social distancing and current mask guidelines, we will have students wearing their face coverings during the class picture. Parents will have the option of selecting the class picture with classmates wearing their masks (this is definitely a year to remember!) and/or order a yearbook which will have individual classmate photos as part of their classroom page. Picture forms will be coming home soon.

Character Warms the Heart Week - February 8-12

February 8-12 is our Pirates ROCK "Character Warms the Heart" week, when we warm up with our good character with fun spirit week activities and collect items for our Treasure Chest resource center to help PCR-3 families in need. We're collecting shampoo & conditioner, body wash, deodorant, and cereal this year. Participate in our spirit days and send in any donations to our schools! Reminder: Friday, February 12 there is no school for our District Inservice Day, a great day to send a nice note to a friend or staff member.

April 2021 Ballot Issue Informational Meetings (Repeat)

Course Requests (Repeat)

It's that time of year again, course request time! We are so excited for the kids to be able to choose what they want to take next year. They get very excited too! 5th grade course requests have been handed out already, and many returned. 6th and 7th grade course requests will be handed out Monday and Tuesday next week and the kids will have a chance to watch a video about all of their specials options. These course requests are due back to Barry office by Thursday, February 11th. We also have google form requests if you would rather do that.

This year's Barry School Yearbook is going to be a huge challenge to create. Because Barry students are divided between a hybrid mode of instruction and a totally virtual setting, we have very few student pictures, and almost no pictures of students from the virtual classrooms.

We need your help, Barry families! If you have pictures of your Barry kids learning, smiling, or just doing their homework, please share! It doesn't matter if the pictures are inside or outside, posed or candid. They can even be school sports/activities pictures (like football, archery, step team, etc.) We will take whatever you have and try to use as many as we can. Please send pictures by February 15th to Michelle Delaney at If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Delaney using the same email.

Carnation Sales - A Barry Tradition (Repeat)

Carnations will be sold for $1.00 each during all lunch periods Feb 8th-11th. All sales are cash and carry and will be done according to current safety guidelines. Proceeds will benefit the Barry PTSA.

Academic Lab (Repeat)

Academic Lab will begin next week. This provides students with additional academic support with a Barry teacher. Academic Lab can either be assigned to a student by a teacher, or it can be requested by a parent.

Academic Lab is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:50-4:00 p.m. An activity bus is available. If you are interested in learning more you can contact the school administration, counselor or child's classroom/homeroom teacher.

Live School

Students received their weekly paychecks today and had their first opportunity to spend their hard earned "Barry Bucks!"

Parent and Student Access Codes for Live School (Repeat)

Today, fifth graders were sent home with parent and student access codes to be able to monitor how their points are accumulating. They were also sent home with their first "paycheck" from our first week using Live School. Please consider helping your student sign up so they can monitor their progress daily instead of waiting for the weekly paycheck. Although the paper has the instructions needed to set up the account, the information at the link below is another good resource to assist you:

Board Approves Return to Full In-Person, Targeting March 1

At a special board meeting held this morning, the Board approved a plan to return to full in-person learning from the alternating schedule scenario at the secondary level, targeting a March 1 start date. The plan would allow for in-person students in grades 6-12 to return to daily in-person instruction starting March 1. With this change, families will be informed that there is increased possibility of student quarantine and student schedule adjustments due to the increased number of students per classroom and limited ability to maintain 6-foot physical distancing. The Board of Education will meet weekly leading up to March 1, to continue to monitor data. We remind our families and staff that the pandemic response is a fluid situation that may require movement in any direction between learning scenarios as the public health crisis evolves.

The proposed plan is a result of working with the Platte County Health Department, and other local health professionals to consider qualitative and quantitative goals with regards to mental health, behavioral health, food security, workforce availability, hospitalizations, cases, testing, and transmission.

If these return to full in-person plans change families' preferred learning scenario, they are asked to contact Dr. Mike Brown, Assistant Superintendent, at 816-858-5420.

Spring Parent Teacher Conferences

Our middle school teachers will be meeting next Wednesday 2/10 after school to identify families they need to connect with for a variety of reasons (new to Barry, attendance/grades/behavior/social/emotional concerns, etc.). If you do not hear from a teacher regarding setting up a conference for 2/24 and you have a pressing concern you would like to meet about, please reach out on 2/12 or later to see if they have any slots remaining.

As always, we can always arrange a time to connect when concerns come up, but our priority for spring conferences is meeting with our families that meet our highest needs as identified above.

We are excited for the upcoming Middle School Swim Team season for 7th & 8th graders!


  • Swimmers must have 14 days of practice before they are allowed to compete in meets.

  • Swimmers need a physical before they can practice! They will need a swimsuit (black competition one piece), goggles, swim cap, and towel. We will order team gear at the beginning of the season.

  • March 1st is our parent 1st virtual meeting at 6 pm Meeting ID


  • March 2nd is our first day at the pool!

  • We will have practice Monday - Friday from 3:20-5:00 at the Platte City YMCA A bus will take the swimmers after school to practice, and there will be a bus that picks up swimmers after practice @ 5:20 to return to Barry Middle School. Guardians will pick up all other swimmers at the YMCA after practice.


Clothing Reminder

"Winter Clothes-

Now that winter is upon us it's time to send a change of clothes for your child. From time to time, an accident happens! We want to make sure your child is warm and safe at school

Please send a bag with one outfit that includes a pair of underwear, pants, and a shirt.

Also, make sure your child has a coat for the outside temperature as we like to go outside to the playground from time to time. If it's 40-50 degrees: Your child should wear a jacket. If it's 30-40 degrees: Your child should wear a winter jacket, hat, and mittens.

Treasure Chest (Repeat)

The Treasure Chest is our school district resource center. It is a stocked pantry providing food, clothing, toiletries, and other household supplies. All items in the Treasure Chest are free to PCR-3 students and families who participate in the Free or Reduced School Lunch Program. The Treasure Chest is open for shopping every week of the calendar year on Wednesday evenings from 4pm-6pm. Families must register at the following link or call 816.858.7001 weekly so we can appropriately plan for resources. Once approved, families can drive through at the original Treasure Chest site (in the north parking lot of PCHS). Identification must be provided in order to receive food.
