Plant cells vs. Animal cells in shape and size
A plant cell has a box-like shape. A animal cell has an irregular or a rounder shape. A plant cell is bigger than an animal cell. This is because a plant cell can grow up to 10 to 100 micrometers. On the other hand animal cells can only grow up to 10 to 30 micrometers. Also in the plant cell the vacuole is larger. In the animal cell the vacuole is smaller.
The organelles in each cell
Plant cell organelles
- Cell wall
- Chloroplast
- Lysosome
- Cell membrane
- Vacuole
- Cytoplasm
- Nucleolus
- Endoplasmic reticulum
- Golgi bodies
- Nucleus
- Mitochondria
- Chromatin
- Ribosomes
Animal cell
Organelles of an animal cell.
Plant cell
Organelles of a plant cell.
Plant and animal cells

Similarities in the cell functions
Both cells have organelles that ...
- controls what comes into and goes out of the cell - Cell membrane
- has a gel-like fluid where the organelles are found - Cytoplasm
- produces the energy a cell needs - Mitochondria
- stores food, water, and other materials - Vacuoles
- packages proteins and materials and distributes them - Golgi bodies
- has passageways to carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another - ER
- makes proteins - Ribosomes
- controls the center of the cell - Nucleus
- produces ribosomes - Nucleolus
- are tiny strands inside the nucleus that includes instructions or information - Chromatin
Differences in cell functions
The plant cell has organelles that ...
- protects the cell - cell wall
- captures energy from the sun to make food - chloroplasts
- breaks down food particles and worn-out cell parts - lysosomes
