Eagle Express
LHS Staff Newsletter--Year 18, Vol. 26, 03/04/19
Principal's Message
Our monthly staff meeting will be held today after school in the Library. Our wonderful Chef Suzette Johnson and her culinary students will be providing a delicious spread for us at this meeting. There will be celebrations, recognitions, and a professional learning activity. It will be a great time to be together as an Eagle family.
Kindness continues to blossom around the building. Here's another installment of our Kindness Challenge videos. Thanks to those who have participated so far!
Advisory
This week’s Advisory will take place on Wednesday, March 6. Similar to recent school choice advisories, this is once again more discussion-oriented and there are no tasks for students to complete in Schoology, so they will not necessarily need their Chromebooks.
Teacher notes, including links to everything you need for the lesson, have been placed in Schoology in theLHS Advisory Group. Remember, once in the group, click Resources to access the grade level folders and then the March 6th folder. Since students do not need access to anything in Schoology this time, you DO NOT NEED to copy this week’s folder into your own Advisory course; instead, you can simply access the Teacher Notes from within the LHS Advisory group. After you have reviewed the lesson, get in touch with Kelly, Krissy or Kasi if you have questions prior to Advisory day. Enjoy the time with your Advisory students.
I Make a Difference
From Gina Wood
I am honored to have been chosen for the I Make a Difference Award but I would also be remiss if I did not acknowledge: Felicia Jackson, Sally McDaniel, Maria Fritts, Deborah Mitchell, Diane Hruska, and Letha Anderson, together we make a difference for the success of the LHS Work Experience program. It is my pleasure to pass the I Make a Difference Award to an amazing person, teacher and friend, Chef Suzette Johnson. I have worked with Suzette for 15 years, and I am inspired by her passion and dedication to her craft and students. When it comes to her craft, Suzette is a perfectionist for taste to presentation. Her passion has inspired so many of her students to pursue a career in the food industry. She spends countless hours working with and preparing her students for competitions, completing college applications, or just letting that one kid who needs someone to believe in him, a firsthand look at their true potential. Suzette has had a number of graduates return as guest speakers or to give a demonstration to her foods class. Under the guidance of Chef Johnson her students have amazed us with their creative gingerbread houses, faculty treats, or one of the tasty Iron Chef competitions. Suzette serves as class sponsor, she is on the Principal Advisory Committee, and the Advisory Committee. Suzette you truly do make a difference!

LEAD Aspiring Administrators Program
The LEAD Aspiring Administrators program is a two-year program designed to identify, select and prepare talented teachers and other instructional personnel for school administration. The program helps teacher leaders build skills essential to their development as a leader and provides a framework for aspiring administrators to grow professionally and develop skills to meet present and future challenges. The rigorous program has four components:
One-day summer institutes in 2019 and 2020;
Monthly leadership sessions held 4:30-6:30 p.m.;
The development of a leadership portfolio; and
- A culminating job-embedded action research project.
Successful applicants must hold a current administrative endorsement and have school and/or division leadership experience. For information and the application, please visit LEAD Virginia Beach. Applications and required recommendations have a firm deadline of March 18. There will be an optional information session March 4 at 4:45 p.m. in the School Board Room at the School Administration Building. Interested applicants should RSVP to pgi@vbschools.com.
Announcements & Reminders
Strategic Planning Input: The division will be soliciting input on the strategic planning process with an upcoming survey. The planning process for the next strategic plan has been ongoing and has included meetings with a variety of stakeholder groups and a Virtual Town Hall hosted on vbschools.com. The information gained from the input process has been incorporated into an online survey that will go live February 18 and remain open until March 8. On Monday, February 18, all Virginia Beach City Public Schools staff members will receive an email that will explain the survey and include a link. You are asked to complete the survey by March 8. The survey link will be available on vbschools.com so that parents and community members may access the survey. Parents will be notified of the survey through an AlertNow email message sent by the Office of Planning, Innovation and Accountability.
Judges Needed: VBCPS will be hosting the Virginia Educator's Rising Student Leadership Conference for the VTfT students this year at Ocean Lakes on March 23rd. The district needs to provide the judges for the various events, including Children Books, impromptu speaking, and Educational Issues. If you are willing to volunteer, email Katie Bennett in our English department.
Ring Ceremony: Our Junior Class will have their Ring Ceremony on April 2nd during 1st block.
