Say Hello to...
Team Kowhai!
From left: Miss Nicole Megaw, Mrs Christine Murphy, Miss Cara Knuckey, Mrs Laurie Edwin
We enjoyed putting our creative skills to use making sand/stone structures - we have some talented budding engineers and architects! We relaxed under the pohutukawa trees for our picnic and to draw our view using observational drawing.
Thank you to all the whanau who came with us and we look forward to our next outing soon!
Growing for Good with Countdown
To celebrate the successful phase out of single-use plastic carrier bags, Countdown announced the ‘Growing for Good’ grants programme, which gives primary schools throughout New Zealand the opportunity to undertake environmental initiatives and projects led by Kiwi kids.
Through the learning unit "Sharing the Planet" at the end of last year the Totara team looked at biodiversity and conservation in our backyard. We learned about the habitats of local insects, lizards and birds and decided to create a garden behind the Totara classrooms for play and learning.
We are excited to announce that we were successful in our application to Countdown to enhance this area and have received $1000 to help us with tools and plants that we can use to create our learning space.
Thank you to Countdown for providing the financial support to help us realise the kids dreams and help make our part of the world a better place.

Don't forget, show our school values, on and off the field.

The Tech Hub
Hi everyone
Tuesday saw the very first day of Design and Technology at Puketapu school, and I am very pleased to say that it went well!
The new space, which is the old dental clinic, is slowing being transformed into an exciting and creative teaching space. I am super lucky to have Mr Quince at school, as he managed to find me a HUGE TV so that I could some some useful clips as part of my lesson, and he even had it all installed and ready to go for on our 1st day. Thanks Mr Quince and Mr Walker for sorting that out for me.
Students are able to work in a variety of spaces within our 'Tech Block', as you can see from the photos below. And with a mixture of writing and drawing, most students should feel comfortable and confident in using these differentiated methods of recording data.
First up... Logo Design. The students are designing a logo for our new Design and Technology department. Once I have these all finished we will pick the logos that we think best represent our department and school, and these will become what we will use to represent us in the future. I can see already there are some budding designers in our midst, and I cant wait to see the final results......so watch this space!
One of the clips I showed today sums up how I feel about Design and Technology, and I hope that the students have taken it on board... "There is no right or wrong. Everything is right"
Nga mihi,
Mrs Wigley
