PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
November is Native American/Alaskan Native Heritage Month. This month presents an opportunity to educate the public about the proud history of Indigenous people in America, and to celebrate the rich and diverse tribal cultures that continue to thrive throughout Native American Country. Today, Native American cultures are alive and evolving within cities, rural communities, tribal communities, and nations across the United States.
Native Americans lived in this state long before it became Oregon. We need to teach youth about Oregon history by including the voice of Oregon’s Native American peoples – both past and present. Currently, ODE includes required teaching about Native Americans in ODE’s Social Studies State Standards. Tribal History / Shared History will create opportunities to expand those requirements across multiple content areas.
At Rock Creek, we are learning together through the implementation of the lessons that the tribes have created for us. During our staff development days, we have devoted time to this work and discussion about how our practices are changing and growing as we, too, are learning more about Tribal History in Oregon.
I would like to encourage you to learn more, too. Learning about tribal nations in Oregon is important for all students. As someone raised in Oregon, I have found this a valuable opportunity to learn more about our state. One of the best gifts we can give our students is the opportunity to learn and grow along side with them. This month, let’s all celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native people and ensure their rich histories and contributions can live on with each passing generation.
~With gratitude and appreciation,
Tiffany

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
Fall Safety Tips
Every year thousands of people are injured due to daylight savings time changes and the changing of the seasons. Autumn means all road users should be extra alert.
-
Wear bright reflective clothing when walking or rolling.
-
Don’t assume people driving will see you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
-
Be alert! Keep eyes and ears open, especially while crossing the street.
-
Cyclists should make sure to have lights and wear helmets – it is the law.
-
Driving or biking? Use extra caution and slowdown in the dark and rain. And remember, do not text and drive!

Very Important: Please label your students coats, hats, lunch boxes, water bottles etc with their names.
