ACADEMIC UPDATES
Math
7on/7A
We are finishing up Part 1 of Geometry on specific angles, triangles, and circumference and area of circles. (MGSE7.G.2, 4, and 5 ) We will have a test over this material on Thursday, February 27th. Students will have their quizzes back to study, study guides, and there is a quizlet (over vocabulary) and quizziz in google classroom to help students prepare for the test. In the second part of the Geometry Unit, we will be looking at 3-D geometric figures. It is very important that students are able to identify the differences between prisms and pyramids. We will examine the different cross sections of 3D figures when cut vertically and horizontally. (MGSE7.G.3) This helps build an understanding of 3D figures. It is very important that students are able to identify the differences between prisms and pyramids as we will be beginning to find surface area of a variety of prisms and pyramids. (MGSE7.G.6) This is typically a challenging skill for students so please remember the help session schedule and that if students are unable to make it to help sessions, we are available from 8:30-9:00 every am for questions and sometimes during homeroom 9:00-9:25.
MATH HELP SESSIONS
70n Thursday 8:00-8:30
7A Thursday 8:00-8:30

Every AM 8:00 Beyer will help any math student!
8A
This Thursday, February 27th, we will have our Unit 7 Test on Systems of Equations, our last 8th grade math test. The test covers same topics as last week's quiz with the addition of word problems. We have also added 7th grade review problems to begin preparing them for the Milestone. Friday we will begin introducing 9th grade standards to help prepare them for math next year. The more 9th grade standards we can teach, the stronger they will be next year. Please encourage your child to use Khan Academy to help understand any math concepts in the future, the videos are excellent way to learn.
Social Studies
Social Studies has a busy few weeks ahead of us! We are having our African History vocabulary quiz on Tuesday 2/25 and our Africa History test of Friday 2/28. JA permission slip are due -the trips will take place on either 3/9, 3/10, 3/11, or 3/12 depending on your child's schedule. We still need parent volunteers. Please get in touch with your child's social studies teacher if you are able to volunteer on the day of the trip. We will begin reading Linda Sue Park's amazing novel "A Long Walk to Water" on 3/9 - please make sure your child has a copy of it by that date.
Science
We are off and running in our Ecology unit - just in time for the Rock Eagle field trip! For the week of 2/24-2/28 we will be learning how matter and energy flows through ecosystems. A quiz review should be available for students this week as well. For the week of 3/2-3/6, we have a quiz on Tuesday, 3/3 which will cover ecology vocabulary as well as matter and energy cycles.
Reminder that science help sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday morning at 8am.
Thanks! Ms. Johnson, Ms. Kane, Ms. Moore, Ms. Chereck, Ms. Villiume, and Ms. Fairlie
Reading
Reading classes are beginning a novel study with a book called The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani. It lines up very well with what students will be learning in social studies with the end of British rule in India.
Students can leave their books in the classroom or bring them home. All reading will take place in the classroom. We will have our first novel quiz on Wednesday, March 4.
Language Arts
We are wrapping up Unit 4 this week with an on-demand writing summative beginning on Monday, February 24th that will last two to three days depending upon the needs of each individual classroom. Additionally, students have a multiple-choice unit summative on Friday, February 28th. A study guide was posted in Google Classroom on February 19th and reviewed in class. There are graded assignments as part of the study guide that have been given staggered due dates.
Help sessions continue to be on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 8 a.m. with pick-up from the cafeteria. Teachers rotate coverage, so students are encouraged to listen for the "all call" rather than their induvial teacher.
Our next unit will be focusing mainly on informational text with the support of argumentative text standards. More information will come on the next newsletter update.
Please make sure your student has a choice reading book with them every day in addition to headphones and a charged ipad.
Sincerely,
Mr. Shea (maternity leave sub for Mrs. Patel), Mrs. Barksdale, Ms. Irvin, Mrs. Barnes, and Mrs. Matthews
Spanish
In Spanish, we have officially started our final unit - Lección 3 about “La familia”. As we move into the chapter, students are learning vocabulary related to family relationships. Over the next couple of weeks, we will focus on learning how to describe family members using descriptive adjectives. As we move into the grammar points of the chapter, it is crucial that your child learns the vocabulary they need for their lessons in class (All vocabulary is located on their Blue Vocabulary Sheet or in Google Classroom). We ask that you please check in with your child regarding their daily study time. Finally, the National Spanish Exam dates are officially set for March 16th and 17th. We would like to thank all of those who registered your child for the exam! We look forward to working with your child in class as they continue their journey en español!
Muchas gracias,
Muchas gracias,

French
Bonjour Bonjour!
Our next lesson in Unit 2A is 2A.2- Forming Yes/No questions. VHL activities can be accessed any time by viewing All Activities if students want extra practice at home.
If you would be so kind to donate a Mardi gras cake for the class for Tuesday February 25th, we'd love you forever! We're going to have a Mardi gras cultural lesson and then eat cake! Madame Blackburn is looking for 4 cake donations and Madame Sudu is looking for 2, please. Any left overs would be served at Multicultural Night. Email us if you're able to provide one and we'll let all know when we have enough. Merci!
Multicultural Night is too awesome to miss! Tuesday March 3rd 5:30-7:30.
This is a document where students can sign up to bring food or volunteer their service that night in 30 minute increments: set up will start at the bus bell; students can serve food or just provide food; breakdown will be at 7:15. Students will want to bring a snack for the evening. I've asked students to ask permission for what they want to do rather than committing without your permission. :)
Thank you so much for supporting the French fun!! Email as always for anything.
