Principal's Corner

Prepping for the 2018-19 School Year

We are actively building out what the student experience will be at OVS for the 2018-19 school year. We have preliminarily determined some aspects and wanted to share out so to help you make plans/decisions for your students.


K-8th grade

The K-8 location will still be determined by the May 15th OPS bond vote. If the bond passes, we will find another location. If it doesn't pass, we will plan to stay at the 60 & L location. Priorities for the potentially new location are to be close to the Interstate and centrally located in the city. I will share out information as we know more. Either way, our priority is to find a long-term home.

9-10th grade

Metropolitan Community College recently agreed to give us the same space to use for next year. We will have the same two classrooms in building 10 (rooms 206 & 208) on the Fort Omaha Campus.

Instructional days/times

K-8th grade

ALL students, full-time and part-time, will participate in class together for a more equitable experience for all students. We will have morning AND afternoon sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for 3.5 hours. We will still implement station rotation model of instruction, and we will add in time where students will work on their K12 coursework with teacher support.

9-10th grade

High school students will meet no more than 2 days/week. We are still working through how our schedule will look. We know that we will not follow the A day, B day schedule this year. We will include online lessons and some of our elective courses may be all online. We are still finalizing the details, but we wanted to share our progress thus far. More to come.

MAP Testing-- Sign-Up TODAY

This year for Spring MAP Testing, we are trying a new testing schedule. To minimize the loss of instruction that comes with required state and district testing, we will be replacing our scheduled face to face enrichment sessions with testing sessions for the week of May 7th-10th. You must sign your child up, grades K-8, using this link for 2 separate testing sessions throughout the week. They must take a Math assessment and a Reading assessment in 2 separate testing sessions. It is up to you to decide what days and times work best for your child and your family.

Please keep in mind when your child focuses best throughout the day and the week. These assessments are used to assess our program and our curriculum’s effectiveness. We want an accurate picture of how our program and our curriculum are servicing the needs of the students.

Students must be signed for their TWO SEPARATE sessions by Thursday May 3rd!!

Upcoming Information Sessions

Pass Along to Anyone Interested in Learning about OVS

Each year, we host a variety of different information sessions to potential new students. We want to encourage families to assist in our recruitment efforts. We will have fliers available next week for families to take and share. Our best recruitment tool is parent and student testimonials of their experience. Many of our current families have been referred by another family in our program.

We will also being needing volunteer at multiple events we will be hosting in May and June. Please consider volunteering for the Curriculum Night and OVS 360 Experience. More details to come.

FREE Community Events

Creighton Soccer Games

Creighton University is offering FREE admission to select soccer games this spring. All games are played at Morrison Stadium on Creighton's campus at 1804 California St.

The following games have FREE Admission:
  • Saturday April 14th at 7pm vs Hastings
  • Saturday April 21st at 1pm vs Northern Illinois

Movie hosted by Dyslexia Association

On Saturday April 21st, the Dyslexia Association will be hosting " The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia." The free showing of the movie will discuss how dyslexia is a language-based learning disability in a "sea of strengths." The movie will be shown at Faith Westwood United Methodist Church, 4814 Oaks Lane at 2 p.m. For more details, call the Dyslexia Association at 402-434-6434.

We had a great week! Students reviewed math skills using Osmo and Study Island. I started to Benchmark students this week and will continue next week. Benchmarking will give an accurate look at your child's reading level. It is awesome to see the growth that all students have made since the beginning of the year!

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us on our field trip to Laurtizen Gardens. We had a great time seeing and learning about all of the birds, plants, and flowers.

I sent an email this week about Spring MAP Testing, please sign up for two separate sessions for your child to test. Remember MAP is used to see strengths and concerns in the area of Reading and Math. These concerns can help guide our teaching!

Week in Review:

We reviewed perimeter and area this week with a Kahoot Quiz. The kids did a great job of using mental math along with their number sense. In ELA, we continued to work on Stamina as it relates to how long we can read to ourselves. Our class goal is to be able to read consistently for fifteen minutes without distractions. I have attached some information about this topic for some background knowledge. Please feel free to use this vocabulary with your child at home and encourage them to read independently everyday.

We were also able to connect with Yellowstone National Park via Skype to talk about Earth Day and the conservation of animals and habitats.

Looking Ahead:

We will continue to work on Stamina in class. We have been using our Literature Circle books for our Read-to-self time. It helps us get a jumpstart on the reading for homework. We will not have online classes or ISL/Skill support Friday, April 20th. Teachers will be attending a conference. I look forward to online lessons on Monday.

9th Grade Newsletter

Phase 2 Bond Program Overview

On May 15th, Phase 2 of the bond issue will be placed on the primary ballot for voting. The bond will fund a variety of renovations and additions to current OPS schools while also adding five additional schools to assist with overcrowding. More information can be found at bond.ops.org.
