- Vasco de Balboa is credited as being the first European to set eyes on the Pacific Ocean from the New World in 1513. This is mainly his only expedition.
- Balboa’s expedition to the Pacific changed the world for Spain. Spain now knew that there was indeed ocean to sail to the east away from the Portuguese. Ultimately, Ferdinand Magellan and his crew would be the first to sail the ocean entirely.
- His expeditions paved the way for Spanish expansion throughout the New World.

Accomplishments
He helped establish the town of Darién on the Isthmus of Panama, becoming interim governor. While leading an expedition in search of gold, he sighted the Pacific Ocean. Balboa claimed the ocean and all of its shores for Spain, opening the way for later Spanish exploration and conquest along the western coast of South America.

In 1513, he led the first European expedition to the pacific ocean, but the news of the discovery arrived after the king had sent Pedro Arias de Avila to serve as the new governor of Darien. Avila was reportedly jealous of Balboa and had him beheaded for treason in 1519.

He was the first European to see (and stand in the waters of) the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean, on September 13, 1513. He accomplished this feat after an arduous trek through the jungles of what is now Panama. He claimed the Pacific Ocean and all its shores for Spain, which opened the way for Spanish exploration and conquest along the western coast of South America.
