MINDFUL MARCH
Let's pause, breathe and notice, so we can respond more mindfully.
DON'T FORGET! SUNDAY, MARCH 13 IS DAYLIGHT SAVINGS....SPRING FORWARD AN HOUR
KEEPING BPMS SAFE FOR ALL
Recently we have been seeing an increase in students using slurs or name calling using racial or gender stereotypes with each other. This has been reported by both teachers and students. Sometimes these unacceptable comments are between students of the same race or gender who think it is funny to joke about a name or stereotype they both can be called. Sometimes it is between friends who are of a different race or gender and think it is funny to call out each other’s stereotypes and negative names as a way of showing camaraderie with each other. Sometimes it is just shouted or written, directed at no one in particular. And finally, sometimes it is between two students who are angry at each other and decide to use racial or gender slurs to offend or disparage each other.
Mr. Opperman and I have been engaged in many investigations and conversations this year trying to determine if a racial comment was between friends or said in malice. Does the intervention require a conversation between two friends about being appropriate in school or is it hate speech and does it require disciplinary action? Regardless, it is unacceptable.
We will be speaking with the student body on Wednesday regarding racial comments. From this point forward regardless of who says it or who it is directed towards all racial slurs will be treated equally. For the first offense, there will be consequences up to suspension from school. Any further offense will be dealt with on a case by case basis but may include multiple days of suspension or moving the student to STRIDE, our on-line schooling option.
This includes written negative racial and gender comments as well. Administration will make the determination of whether a comment is offensive.
We urge you to have a conversation with your student about respecting your own culture, ethnicity, gender and racial identity as well as those of others. We continue to strive to make Baker Prairie a safe place for all students to learn.
MASKS OPTIONAL: MARCH 14th
Face coverings will be optional inside the school building beginning Monday, March 14th. Teachers will be talking with students about our care for each other in respecting family or individual choices with face coverings. We will have face coverings available if students would like to wear one.
CURRICULUM RENEWAL OPEN HOUSE
As we prepare to adopt a new social sciences curriculum, we invite families to an open house. Come learn about our curriculum renewal process, view potential instructional resources, and have the opportunity to ask questions about social science instruction in Canby. The event will take place at Ackerman Library on March 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. Drop in at any time.
