Nazareth Catholic Community
November 17, 2019 - 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time
Greetings everyone,
Do you know who Saint Mother Cabrini is? We celebrated her Feast Day this week - Wednesday, November 13. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was an Italian-born sister. In 1880, after founding the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, she presented herself to Pope Leo XIII and asked to be sent to China. Leo answered, “Not to the East, but to the West.” She was to help the thousands of Italian immigrants already in the United States.
But between the time that she left Italy and arrived in New York, the local archbishop decided that he didn’t need her. No one even met her at the docks when she arrived. When Mother Cabrini finally made it to the archbishop’s office, he told her that she should return to Italy. In response, this woman, who knew little English, said, “In America, I stay.”
So she did, where she and her sisters helped countless immigrants. In her lifetime, she established 67 institutions: schools, hospitals and orphanages! Mother Cabrini is one of the many sisters who faced down opposition, even within their own church, in order to do good. This week in prayer perhaps you could ask for that same kind of courage, so that when you’re presented with something difficult you can hear her say, “In America, I stay.”
Peace,
~ Jamie

Join us for a wonderful tradition at Nazareth College!
The Service of Winter's Light: An Interfaith Celebration of Peace and Hope is a way for our campus to come together at the end of the semester to find grounding and perspective in a world that at times feels fractured and uncertain. This service is scheduled on the eve of Reading Day and is meant to be a time of reflection during the busyness and stress of the end of the semester.
This service will include readings and reflections from a number of the various traditions that celebrate holidays during this time of year, including Advent, Christmas, Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Winter Solstice. Music will include Nazareth Chamber Strings and Chamber Choir.
The service will end with an outdoor candlelight procession - please dress warmly!
Hot chocolate and cookies will be served afterward.
Sponsored by the Center for Spirituality, the Department of Music and the Nazareth Undergraduate Association.
