Teachers share their goals for the new school year
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
The first day of school is fast approaching. I hope everyone is as excited for the start of the new year as I am. I’ve spent the past couple of months learning as much about Roseburg Public Schools and this community as possible, and I have to say, I feel lucky to be on this journey with you.
Thank you to everyone who has attended the Community Listening Sessions we’ve hosted so far. I’ve gained valuable insight that will help guide our planning for this year and beyond. We will host more sessions in coming weeks, so please stay tuned. My goal is to ensure our district reflects the values, ambitions and dreams of this community. When it comes to helping our students succeed and prepare for their futures, we are all in this together.
One of my top priorities is improving communication with all of our stakeholders, inside and outside of the district. Throughout the year, you can expect to hear more about the work our schools are doing to ensure our students are healthy, happy and excited to come to school and learn.
Thank you for welcoming me into your community. Let’s have an amazing year!

RPS Superintendent
STUDENTS FIND DIRECTION IN CTSOs
CTE program participants can join organizations
With a new school year right around the corner, students at Roseburg High School will have the chance to select from a vast array of extracurricular programs. In offering a wide variety, RHS hopes every student will be able to discover their passion.
For many high school students, involvement in the school’s burgeoning career and technical education department – and related Career Technical Student Organizations – offers a pathway to fulfilling adventures and exploration.
Just ask Maryn Wicks, an incoming junior who has been a member of Family, Career & Community Leaders of America since her freshman year. Earlier in the summer she competed at FCCLA Nationals in California and brought home a silver medal.
“I really have been thinking about my future,” she said. “I am thinking about becoming a public speaker, and through FCCLA, I am able to learn and test my abilities in competition and in workshops. Over all, I love the program.”
Wicks competed in a National Programs in Action competition, under the category “Stop the Violence – Students Taking on Prevention.” Her project focused on preventing bullying.
She and fellow student Jade Hansen, who participated in workshops at the conference, were among 8,600 FCCLA members who attended.
Students who register for CTE classes are eligible to sign up for one of the school’s related CTSO’s. FCCLA members must take a culinary, hospitality or early childhood class. There’s also Future Business Leaders of America, for students who have taken or are taking a business class; FFA, for students involved in agriculture classes; and SkillsUSA, which is geared toward welding, woods, drafting and automotive students.
The groups will have information booths at Freshmen Orientation on Sept. 3, and most will offer an introductory meeting within the first couple of weeks of school.
FBLA Adviser Larina Warnock said CTSO’s support the curriculum students are learning in their CTE courses, and often, in their core classes as well.
“There are certain things students learn in all extracurricular activities: work ethic, discipline to practice, time management, teamwork and collaborative problem solving,” Warnock said. “These skills are learned in CTSOs, too. I think what sets CTSOs apart is that they teach these and other job skills explicitly. This provides a level of relevance that helps students feel more prepared for their futures.”
Sixteen RHS students attended this summer’s 2019 FBLA National Leadership Conference in Texas, where 13,000 students from around the world competed in 144 events. The RHS chapter recognitions included Gold Seal of Merit, Outstanding Chapter, Chapter Challenge and Outstanding Local Chapter Adviser for Oregon. In addition, incoming sophomores Kou Castle and Aiyana Brown took eighth place in the Introduction to Business Presentation, representing the top 0.5 percent of competitors, and incoming senior Margo Boyd was elected FBLA National Secretary.
FCCLA Adviser Sheri Carson, who has taken students to Nationals for 20 of the 21 years she has led the program at RHS, said CTSOs give students the opportunity to find the one thing, or more than one, that they feel fits with what they would like to do based on their interests.
“I just want students to be involved and to learn how to be leaders and to be able to have skills to help make our school, communities and state the best places that they can be,” she said.
NEW EQUIPMENT INSTALLS COMING
New security tools are coming to several schools in the district this year as we continue our work to ensure students and staff are as safe as possible in our buildings.
Work is beginning at Green and Winchester elementary schools, where new intercom systems will enhance the ability for staff members to respond and communicate with one another in an emergency situation. The systems are expected to be completed by the time school starts.
The district is also planning for the installation of new security camera systems. The systems will be in addition to cameras and equipment installed last year at the middle schools and in the high school Career and Technical Education building.
Installations and upgrades are planned for the high school and both middle schools. We will also begin installation of cameras at the elementary level. A basic camera system will be installed for Sunnyslope, Green, Winchester, Eastwood and Fullerton elementary schools. The district plans to add additional cameras at these locations in future years along with camera systems at the three other elementary schools.
Projects are being prioritized based on safety concerns throughout the district as well as the condition of existing equipment.
