"Look at all those folks-you'd think William Jennings Bryan was speakin'." -page 213
Meaning: William Jennings Bryan is a super important democratic politician during that time period, so therefore a lot of people in the south would listen to him since he was a democrat.
Reason Allusion is Used: Harper Lee used this allusion to show that this is a very important trial ; for example, a ton of people would come out as if William Jennings Bryan was making a very important speech.
Effect: This allusion was used to show how important this trial was in Maycomb County.
"He says as far as he can trace back the Finches we ain't, but for all he knows we mighta come straight out of Ethiopia durin' the Old Testament.
Meaning: During the time of the Old Testament, Ethiopia was a kingdom of Northeast Africa. Ethiopia was a very old and religious town, therefore, Uncle Jack Finch made a sarcastic remark towards Ethiopia.
Reason Allusion is Used: Harper Lee used this allusion to show the sarcastic and humorous side of Uncle Jack Finch, since he cant trace how far the Finch legacy goes.
Effect: This was used to show the sarcastic and funny side of Uncle Jack Finch, and to always have a humorous side in bad situations.
