Principal's Note

It’s no surprise that I’m thinking about all the details involved in being Principal of Greater Peterborough University Technical College! These next few months will be hectic as the team gets everything together, ready for September. The fact that our building is already complete and ICT system in place is a terrific foundation for these months of planning, as problems with such core elements can significantly impact new UTCs. Other Principals have shared with me their challenging starts with non-functioning ICT systems, no Broadband, defective heating systems and classrooms without doors and the occasional (internal) wall… none of which will be on our list of challenges… thank goodness!

By the time I applied for the position of Principal there were 75 reasons why I wanted the job… and they were the 75 conversations I had conducted with the students who had applied by that point. Their enthusiasm for our specialisms, willingness to learn in different ways and keenness for real industry experiences was impressive. Ensuring that we can keep the promises we’ve made to them about how unique and special their experience will be one of my main motivations over the coming weeks and months.

I’ve always been confident that the UTC would open in September 2016 and I am pleased to confirm that we have already recruited over the numbers that justify our opening… and can now carry on recruiting even more Year 10s and 12s.

Over the next few months we want to ensure that we are as available and open as possible in our communication with students, parents and the communities we serve… please get in touch if you have any questions about GPUTC!

Our last 2 open evenings have been a great success!

We have had two really great open evenings in January and February. A big thank you to all of our sponsors and partners who came along on the evening to talk to students and applicants alike, giving them a detailed insight into how we would be working with them.

Well ahead of our scheduled target we have now hit our student recruitment target for both year 10 and 12 for September 2016. This is great news for the GPUTC however we will not be stopping there as applications are still open to join us. If you are thinking about joining us in September fill in our application form below.

What have we been up to...

Take a look below to see some of the things that we have been up to in the New Year from having local Councillors of Peterborough visiting us to the Dragons Den event that took place last month.

Serpentine Green

We spent a busy Saturday over at the Serpentine Green Shopping Centre in Hampton talking to shoppers and spreading the word about GPUTC. We had some great conversations with budding young engineers and builders as did our robot PiP. Many shoppers asked us why we had brought PiP to the shopping centre, so we got to tell them that learning to program PiP is part of our engineering course. Take a look below at our Principal and PiP hard at work.

Filling the skills gap

Did you know that we will need over 2.5 million engineers in the UK by 2022? Here at GPUTC we will help fill the skills gap by offering our students insight into a number of professions including engineering and construction. Take a look at the statistics below and join us to become an engineer, builder, designer or architect of the future starting September 2016.
