Fifth Grade Library Newsletter

October 9, 2015

Hello CCE Library Friends and Families! October is here and isn't it lovely? This time of year finds me on my front porch, coffee or tea in hand and a good book shared with one of my kids or occasionally, greedily stealing a couple minutes to read alone. I hope you are all enjoying the more fall like weather (when we have it) and all of the things that fall means to you.

It has been a very busy couple weeks! I apologize for not getting a newsletter out the last two weeks but I am trying to figure out the best way to reach more people. In the end I have decided to continue posting it to the library website and sharing the link to this week's newsletter. I love the ability I have to share videos and pictures online so I'm going to give it another try.

This year has been a big change for us in the library since I have so much built in time for technology instruction and practice. It is amazing to me how much we've already been able to do!

Literature Sharing

Mondays are spent together sharing the love of reading. We talk about what the kids have been reading at school, home or otherwise. This is a great chance for kids to hear about the books their friends are reading and to share great titles with each other.

Mrs. Odle's class and I are currently reading Force Out by Tim Green. This is a book from the Iowa Children's Choice Awards Nominee list for this school year. It features two boys who are desperate to play in a special baseball league. They go to lengths that could land them in a lot of trouble to ensure their chance to play.

Miss Smith's class and I are currently reading Doll Bones together by Holly Black. This is an Iowa Children's Choice Award Nominee book this year and one that the kids are enjoying so far. The story surrounds three kids who play fantastical games of imagination after school together involving dolls. The children create whole worlds in their mind in which their characters live. They pretend that the locked up doll in a cabinet is their queen and they include her in their vivid stories. Currently one child has backed out of the group but is being lured back in by the promise of removing the queen from her locked cabinet.

Technology Update

Fridays are the day that fifth grade and I work together on learning technology. The last two weeks the students were using iPads to solve a scavenger hunt of the library using QR codes and a lot of thinking. They did a great job and really impressed me with their problem solving abilities and technology know how. This week we spent our time working in the computer lab practicing typing skills on Typing Club. I strongly encourage all fifth graders to practice typing a couple days a week from home if you are able. Please go to this website: or follow the link on the school website. The students then can log in with the username and password that is in their planner.

Fifth graders check out books on Wednesday mornings, please remind your child to return any books they are finished with on or before Wednesday.

Thank you and have a great weekend!
