A Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Greetings Mayfield Community!

I want to start this week's newsletter by thanking Mrs. Harris-Castaneda, Ms. Hardy, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Tarne and Mrs. Raynor- Honey for their efforts to bring their classes to the Special Olympics event that was held at Manassas Park High School on Friday, October 4. Our students had such a wonderful time participating and sharing in the fun activities with students from school in Manassas City, Manassas Park, and Prince William County. Thank you to Manassas Park and Mrs. Kiernan-Graham for organizing this event for our students.

Thanks!

Chaperones Needed for Friday, October 11

Our 6th graders are taking a field trip to the Udvar Hazy Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on Friday, October 11, 2019. We are still in need of chaperones to help out and travel with our students for the field trip. This is a great field trip that Mrs. Stone and the rest of the 6th grade teachers have worked hard on organizing. Any volunteer help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact your child's homeroom teacher if you are able to chaperone.

Patriot's Pen Essay Contest

Each year more than 111,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $900,000 in state and national awards. Each first-place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. If any 6th graders here at Mayfield would like to participate, please contact your homeroom teacher. All student entries must be submitted to a sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight, Oct. 31.

Digital Citizenship Week, October 14-18, 2019

Digital citizens think critically about what they see online, understand the benefits and risks of sharing information, and balance screen time with other activities. But digital citizens aren't born—they're taught by parents and teachers like you!

Hers is a quick video that talks about what digital citizenship is:
